According to American artist George Caleb Bingham, himself a resident of Kansas City at the time, one could see the " dense columns of smoke arising in every direction ", symbolic of what he termed " a ruthless military despotism which spared neither age, sex, character, nor condition ".

George Caleb Bingham ( March 20, 1811 – July 7, 1879 ) was an American artist whose paintings of American life in the frontier lands along the Missouri River exemplify the Luminist style.

That year the George Caleb Bingham Catalogue Raisonné Supplement Of Paintings & Drawings announced the authentication of ten recently discovered paintings by Bingham ; like all but about 5 % of his works, they are unsigned.

Born in Augusta County, Virginia, George Caleb Bingham was the second of seven children of Mary Amend and Henry Vest Bingham.

The title of the sale did not mention Ferrary by name, but read as follows: “ Catalogue of the Famous and Remarkable Collection of British and Colonial Coins, Patterns & Proofs from George III to the Present Day, Formed by a Nobleman, Recently Deceased .” The catalogue had 710 lots and 15 plates.
