" The Satan ", meaning literally " the adversary ", appears in the prose prologue of Job, where he is not the devil, as he becomes in later Christian works, but one of the celestial beings who stand before God in the heavenly court.

In different parts of the earth, Satan will manifest himself among men as a majestic being of dazzling brightness, resembling the description of the Son of God given by John in the Revelation.

God used Satan to try King David (; ), who then numbered the people out of pride.

The religious dualism of Christianity is not a perfect dualism as God ( good ) will inevitably destroy Satan ( evil ).

Rather, evil spirits described in various faiths ' traditions, such as Satan, fallen angels, demons, and jinns, are metaphors for the base character traits a human being may acquire and manifest when he turns away from God and follows his lower nature.

It also distinguishes between the world ( which is full of evil and under the dominion of Satan ) and the children of God ( who are set apart from the world ).

In Athens, Paul visits an altar with an inscription dedicated to an unknown god, so when he gives his speech on the Areopagos, he proclaims to worship that same unknown god whom he identifies as the Christian God.
