In March 1999 Władysław Szpilman visited London for Jewish Book Week, where he met English readers to mark the publication of his bestselling book in England.

In Poland, the last fragment of Władysław Tarnowski's song Śpij, kolego (" Sleep, friend "), a portion of the larger composition Jak to na wojence ładnie ( the title has no precise English translation, but it is roughly " how nice it is in war ", with a diminutive form conveying a sense of ironic solidarity ) is an integral part of a military funeral.

His work focusing on this period includes the films Operation Daybreak ( covering the assassination by the Czechoslovakian Resistance of Nazi leader Reinhard Heydrich ), The Statement ( a fictionalized account of the post-War life-on-the-run of French collaborator Paul Touvier ), The Pianist ( an adaptation of the autobiography of the Jewish-Polish musician Władysław Szpilman covering his survival during the Nazi occupation of Poland ), the play later adapted to film Taking Sides ( focused on the post-War " de-Nazification " investigation of the German conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler ), the play Collaboration ( about the composer Richard Strauss and his partnership with the Jewish writer Stefan Zweig ), and the play An English Tragedy ( dealing with the British fascist John Amery ).

Several saints and six popes have borne this name, including the only English pope, Adrian IV, and the only Dutch pope, Adrian VI.

Philip Augustus of France defeated an army consisting of Imperial German, English and Flemish soldiers, led by Otto IV of Germany.

In 1512 the Auld Alliance was renewed and under its terms, when the French were attacked by the English under Henry VIII, James IV invaded England in support.

Recusants were subject to various civil disabilities and penalties under English penal laws, most of which were repealed during the Regency and reign of George IV ( 1811 – 30 ).

Some feel that the popular use of the term " Regency dance " is not technically correct, as the actual English Regency ( the future George IV ruling on behalf of mad King George III ) lasted only from 1811 until 1820.

Louis IV was assisted in his doctrinal dispute with the papacy by Marsilius of Padua and later by the English Franciscan friar and scholar William of Ockham.

* September 9 – Battle of Flodden Field: King James IV of Scotland is defeated and killed by an English army under Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey.

* September 21 – 25 – James IV of Scotland invades Northumberland in support of the pretender to the English throne Perkin Warbeck.

Emissaries were immediately dispatched to inform King Philip IV of France of the intentions of the English.

King Václav IV ( Wenceslas in English, Wenzel in German ), upon hearing this news, was so stunned that he died shortly after, supposedly due to the shock.
