Abba Mari ben Moses ben Joseph, was a Provençal rabbi, born at Lunel, near Montpellier, towards the end of the 13th century.

He was a descendant of Meshullam ben Jacob of Lunel, one of whose five sons was Joseph, the grandfather of Abba Mari, who, like his son Moses, the father of Abba Mari, was highly respected for both his rabbinical learning and his general erudition.

The likelihood of a 1st century tomb being built to the west of the city is questionable, as according to the late 1st century Rabbinic leader, Akiva ben Joseph, quoted in the Mishnah, tombs should not built to the west of the city, as the wind in Jerusalem generally blows from the west, and would blow the smell of the corpses and their impurity over the city, and the Temple Mount.

11th to 12th century grammarians of the Golden age of Jewish culture in Spain included Judah ben David Hayyuj, Jonah ibn Janah, Abraham ibn Ezra, Joseph Kimhi, Moses Kimhi and David Kimhi.

Sefer Mitzvot Katan (" SeMaK ") by Isaac ben Joseph of Corbeil is an abridgement of the SeMaG, including additional practical Halakhah, as well as agaddic and ethical material.

Titus Flavius Josephus ( 37 – 100 ), also called Joseph ben Matityahu ( Biblical Hebrew: יוסף בן מתתיהו, Yosef ben Matityahu ), was a 1st-century Romano-Jewish historian and hagiographer who was born in Jerusalem-then part of Roman Judea-to a father of priestly descent and a mother who claimed royal ancestry.

( Some Jewish texts also refer to a " Messiah ben Joseph " or " Messiah ben Ephraim ", a military leader descended from the biblical Ephraim, who will successfully lead the army of Israel in many battles before being killed by Armilus, when Israel is defeated by Gog and Magog.

A Kabbalistic tradition within Judaism is that the commonly-discussed messiah who will usher in a period of freedom and peace ( Messiah ben David ) will be preceded by Messiah ben Joseph, who will die sacrificing himself while uniting all of Israel in preparing the world for the arrival of Messiah ben David.

The most important writers are Yose ben Yoseh, probably in the 6th century, chiefly known for his compositions for Yom Kippur ; Eleazar Kalir, the founder of the payyetanic style, perhaps in the 7th century ; Saadia Gaon ; and the Spanish school, consisting of Joseph ibn Abitur ( died in 970 ), ibn Gabirol, Isaac Gayyath, Moses ibn Ezra, Abraham ibn Ezra and Judah ha-Levi, Moses ben Nahman ( Nahmanides ) and Isaac Luria.

Philoponus ' arguments against an infinite past were used by the early Muslim philosopher, Al-Kindi ( Alkindus ); the Jewish philosopher, Saadia Gaon ( Saadia ben Joseph ); and the Muslim theologian, Al-Ghazali ( Algazel ).

However, Isaac evidently ignored the woman's alleged confession in favor of the testimony of Joseph ben Todros and of Jacob, a pupil of Moses de León, both of whom assured him on oath that the work was not written by de Leon.

The successors of Maimonides, from the 13th to the 15th century — Nahmanides, Abba Mari ben Moses, Simon ben Zemah Duran, Joseph Albo, Isaac Arama, and Joseph Jaabez — narrowed his 13 articles to three core beliefs: Belief in God ; in Creation ( or revelation ); and in providence ( or retribution ).

Among well known ( generally non-kabbalist or anti-kabbalist ) Rabbis who rejected the idea of reincarnation are Saadia Gaon, David Kimhi, Hasdai Crescas, Yedayah Bedershi ( early 14th century ), Joseph Albo, Abraham ibn Daud, the Rosh and Leon de Modena.

Prodded by President Abraham Lincoln, Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker moved his army in pursuit, but was relieved just three days before the battle and replaced by Meade.

In the 9th or 10th century, Yehuda Ibn Quraysh compared the phonology and morphology of Hebrew, Aramaic, and Arabic, but attributed this resemblance to the Biblical story of Babel, with Abraham, Isaac and Joseph retaining Adam's language, with other languages at various removes becoming more altered from the original Hebrew.

The " patriarchal history " recounts the events of the major patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to whom God reveals himself and to whom the promise of descendants and land is made, while the story of Joseph serves to take the Israelites into Egypt in preparation for the next book, Exodus.

In composing the Patriarchal history the Yahwist drew on four separate blocks of traditional stories about Abraham, Jacob, Judah and Joseph, combining them with genealogies, itineraries and the " promise " theme to create a unified whole.

The patriarchs, or ancestors, are Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, with their wives ( Joseph is normally excluded ).

Scholars generally agree that the theme of divine promise unites the patriarchal cycles, but many would dispute the idea that a single theme ( or theology ) runs through Genesis – a theology of the Abraham cycle or the Jacob cycle or the Joseph cycle might be possible, or a theology of the Yahwist or the Priestly source, but not a single theology or overarching theme for all of Genesis.

Several verses speak of Isaac as a " gift " to Abraham ( VI: 84 ; XIX: 49-50 ), and XXIX: 26-27 adds that God made " prophethood and the Book to be among his offspring ", which has been interpreted to refer to Abraham's two prophetic sons, his prophetic grandson Jacob, and his prophetic great-grandson Joseph.

Elsewhere in the Qur ' an, Isaac is mentioned in lists: Joseph follows the religion of his forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob ( XII: 38 ) and speaks of God's favor to them ( XII: 6 ); Jacob's sons all testify their faith and promise to worship the God that their forefathers, " Abraham, Ishmael and Isaac ", worshiped ( II: 127 ); and the Qur ' an commands Muslims to believe in the revelations that were given to " Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and the Patriarchs " ( II: 136 ; III: 84 ).

After Jacob died there 17 years later, Joseph carried Jacob's remains to the land of Canaan, where he gave them stately burial in the same Cave of Machpelah as were buried Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah and Jacob's wife, Leah ().

In contrast to Abraham — who illuminates the world with knowledge of God and earns the respect of the inhabitants of the land of Canaan — and Isaac — who continues his father's teachings and also lives in relative harmony with his neighbors — Jacob experiences many personal struggles both in the land and out of it-including the hatred of his brother, Esau ; the deception of his father-in-law, Laban ; the rape of his daughter, Dinah ; the death of his favorite wife, Rachel ; and the sale of his son, Joseph.

These ushpizin ( Aramaic ' guests '), represent the seven shepherds of Israel: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Aaron, Joseph and David.

This is followed by the story of the three patriarchs ( Abraham, Isaac and Jacob ), Joseph ( Genesis 12 – 50 ) and the four matriarchs ( Sarah, Rebekah, Leah and Rachel ).

Abraham ibn Ezra and Joseph Bonfils observed that phrases in those verses present information that people should only have known after the time of Moses.

Soon thereafter, a group of ten Congregationalist ministers: Samuel Andrew, Thomas Buckingham, Israel Chauncy, Samuel Mather, James Noyes, James Pierpont, Abraham Pierson, Noadiah Russell, Joseph Webb and Timothy Woodbridge, all of whom were alumni of Harvard, met in the study of Reverend Samuel Russell in Branford, Connecticut, to pool their books to form the school's first library.

In 1729 his wife published his Atlas Coelestis, assisted by Joseph Crosthwait and Abraham Sharp, who were responsible for the technical side.

In his first treatises, Get ha-Shemot and Maftei ’ ach ha-Re ' ayon, Abulafia describes a linguistic type of Kabbalah similar to the early writings of Rabbi Joseph Gikatilla.

In his History of Medieval Spain ( Cornell University Press, 1975 ), Joseph F. O ' Callaghan writes:

Karaites were said to have attended his lectures, among them being Aaron ben Joseph the Elder, who later became one of the greatest Karaite authorities ( although Graetz writes that there is no veracity to that ).

In April 1844, Joseph Smith referred to polygamy as " John C. Bennett's spiritual wife system " and warned " if any man writes to you, or preaches to you, doctrines contrary to the Bible, the Book of Mormon, or the book of Doctrine and Covenants, set him down as an imposter.

According to Joseph P. Schultz, modern scholarship " considers the Maccabean revolt less as an uprising against foreign oppression than as a civil war between the orthodox and reformist parties in the Jewish camp ", while John J. Collins writes that while the civil war between Jewish leaders led to the king's new policies, it is wrong to see the revolt as simply a conflict between Hellenism and Judaism, since " The revolt was not provoked by the introduction of Greek customs ( typified by the building of a gymnasium ) but by the persecution of people who observed the Torah by having their children circumcised and refusing to eat pork.

Also in his letters, King Joseph ben Aaron, the ruler of the Khazars, writes:

Joseph N. Tylenda S. J writes that the book was composed anonymously is " not surprising " since the author writes in the Imitation that one should " love to be unknown.

Stewart Durham writes, " The most notorious Danite was Ephe Hanks, who went against Joseph Smith's wishes and started the Danites, on his own.

About the clock, Hackwood writes: This was erected, as an inscription upon it testifies, as a memorial to the late Joseph Tonks, surgeon.

Joseph Dan writes that there is no truth to the popular notion that the Mitnaggedim were more rationalist than the Hasidim ; Lurianic notions dominate in the theologies of both camps.

Đilas is mentioned in Saul Bellow's Humboldt's Gift, where he writes about Joseph Stalin's " twelve-course all-night banquets " and the theme of boredom.

Fellow Austrian Joseph Salerno praised Sennholz as an under-appreciated member of the Austrian school who " writes so clearly on such a broad range of topics that he is in danger of suffering the same fate as Say and Bastiat.

Yitzhak M. Brudny writes that, in Shafarevich's opinion, Jews represented such a ' small nation ' in Russia, and full of hatred against traditional Russian way of life, first played an active role in the terrorist regime of Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin and then, during the Perestroika era were trying to implant into Russia the liberal values of the Western world.

Lucas lists labdanum ( along with frankincense, myrrh, galbanum, and storax ) among the only materials most certain to have been used in ancient Egypt and that labdanum " was abundant in the countries bordering the Mediterranean with which Egypt had intercourse .” He writes that in the Bible “ it is stated that certain merchants carried ladanum into Egypt from Gilead ( Genesis, xxxvii: 25, Revised Version ) and that Jacob sent ladanum to Egypt as a present to his son Joseph ( Genesis, xliii: II Revised Version ).” Newberry reports that the ancient Egyptians were acquainted with labdanum as early as the 1st century.
