Instead, from 1 January 1923, almost all the remaining companies were grouped into the " big four ", the Great Western Railway, the London and North Eastern Railway, the London, Midland and Scottish Railway and the Southern Railway companies ( there were also a number of other joint railways such as the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway and the Cheshire Lines Committee as well as special joint railways such as the Forth Bridge Railway, Ryde Pier Railway and at one time the East London Railway ).

The first British railway to build coaches with bogies, instead of rigidly mounted axles, was the Midland Railway in 1874.

The following year saw local services on the Midland Railway route to Gloucester withdrawn and the former Midland route to via was closed on 7 March 1966. and on the line towards Bath survived until 5 January 1970.

From May 2003 until September 2004 Midland Mainline operated an hourly service between St Pancras and Manchester Piccadilly at the request of the Strategic Rail Authority whilst the West Coast Main Line between London Euston and Manchester underwent engineering work using former Virgin CrossCountry High Speed Trains.

* Snow Hill tunnel, south of Farringdon station, was reopened for passenger use in 1988, providing a link between the Midland Main Line, from St Pancras station, and the former Southern Railway, via London Bridge station.

* The former line from Snow Hill to Wolverhampton has been reopened as the Midland Metro tram system.

Long-distance trains from Marylebone began to be scaled back from 1958 after their transfer from BR's Eastern Region to the London Midland Region ( although Marylebone itself, and the first few miles of its route, had belonged to the Western Region since 1950 ), as the former Great Central Main Line was regarded as a duplicate of the Midland Main Line.

In 1908, William Barks ( in an attempt to increase the family income ) moved with his family to Midland, Oregon, some miles north of Merrill, to be closer to the new railway lines.

Thornbury was once served by a railway line ; it was the terminus of a branch line of the Midland Railway ( later part of the LMS ), from Yate on the Bristol to Gloucester main line, with intermediate stations at Iron Acton and Tytherington.

He decided that this should be changed and put forward a proposal for a branch running from the station at Keighley to Oxenhope, which was warmly received by a number of mill owners and other influential people in the area as well as the Midland Railway, the owners of the railway through Keighley.

The line was operated by the Midland Railway, who owned most of the rail network in the area, and was eventually bought by the Midland in part due to interest from the rival railway company, the Great Northern.
