* 1783 – In Paris, Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and François Laurent, Marquis d ' Arlandes, make the first untethered hot air balloon flight.

On November 21, 1783, in Annonay, France, the first untethered manned flight was made by Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and François Laurent d ' Arlandes in a hot air balloon created on December 14, 1782 by the Montgolfier brothers.

However the first free flight ( i. e., untethered ) by manned craft was by balloon built by the brothers Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Etienne Montgolfier in Annonay, France in 1783.

On the fourth day of the mission, astronauts McCandless and Stewart performed the first untethered spacewalk, operating the Manned Maneuvering Unit ( MMU ) for the first time.

Mission highlights included: the first use of a space based laser for environmental research ; deployment and retrieval of a spacecraft in support of solar wind and corona studies ; robotic processing of semiconductors ; maneuvered the robotic arm in proximity to over 100 Shuttle reaction control system jet firings to measure forces imparted to a plume detection instrument in support of future Space Station / Shuttle rendezvous flights ; first untethered spacewalk in 10 years to test a self-rescue jetpack.

During the first of his two Space Shuttle missions he made the first ever untethered free flight, using the Manned Maneuvering Unit.

McCandless made the first untethered free flight on each of the two MMUs carried on board, thereby becoming the first person ever to make an untethered spacewalk.

This mission marked the first flight checkout of the Manned Maneuvering Unit and the Manipulator Foot Restraint with McCandless and Stewart performing two untethered extravehicular activities.

STS-64 marked the first flight of Lidar In-space Technology Experiment ( LITE ) and first untethered U. S. extravehicular activity ( EVA ) in 10 years.

Operations with SAFER marked the first untethered EVA since STS 51-A in 1984, and also last such EVA of the program. SAFER went on to become a mainstay of US and joint spacewalks during the assembly of the International Space Station and beyond.

These EVAs represented man's first untethered operations from a spacecraft in flight.

* May 13 – The Sikorsky VS-300, which made its first flight the previous year, makes its first untethered flight.

* 1983 – During STS-6, astronauts Story Musgrave and Don Peterson perform the first space shuttle spacewalk.

Alexey Leonov performs the first manned spacewalk during Voskhod 2 EVA

The first American spacewalk was performed on June 3, 1965 by Edward H. White, II from the second manned Gemini flight, Gemini 4, for 21 minutes, on a tether.

Such a self-contained spacewalk was first attempted by Eugene Cernan in 1966 on Gemini 9A, but Cernan could not reach the maneuvering unit without tiring.

* 2008 – CNSA astronaut Zhai Zhigang becomes the first Chinese person to perform a spacewalk while flying on Shenzhou 7.

** Two cosmonauts transfer from Soyuz 5 to Soyuz 4 via a spacewalk while the two craft are docked together, the first time such a transfer takes place.

During the Gemini 4 mission, White became the first American astronaut to perform a spacewalk.

* Voskhod 2-Soviet space mission which included the first spacewalk.

Salyut broke several spaceflight records, including the first space station, several mission duration records, the first ever orbital handover of a space station from one crew to another, and various spacewalk records.

A planned spacewalk by Lenoir and Allen, the first of the Space Shuttle program, was postponed by one day after Lenoir became ill, and then had to be cancelled when the two spacesuits that were to be used developed problems.

This was the first Space Shuttle mission during which a spacewalk was conducted, and the first in which the Extravehicular Mobility Unit ( EMU ) was used.
