Another youth Mehmed found attractive, and who was presumably more accommodating, was Radu III the Fair, the brother of the famous Vlad the Impaler, “ Radu, a hostage in Istanbul whose good looks had caught the Sultan ’ s fancy, and who was thus singled out to serve as one of his most favored pages .” After the defeat of Vlad, Mehmed placed Radu on the throne of Wallachia as a vassal ruler.

* 1462 – Vlad III the Impaler attempts to assassinate Mehmed II ( The Night Attack ) forcing him to retreat from Wallachia.

* 1476 – Vlad III Dracula defeats Basarab Laiota with the help of Stephen the Great and Stephen V Bathory and becomes the ruler of Wallachia for the third time.

The Pope did, however, influence Vlad III Dracula — whom the Pope held in high regard — in starting a war against Sultan Mehmed II of Turkey.

In addition to its unique architecture, the castle is famous because of persistent myths that it was once the home of Vlad III Dracula.

One famous ruler in this period was Vlad III the Impaler ( also known as Vlad Dracula or ), Prince of Wallachia in 1448, 1456 – 62, and 1476.

* June 17 – Vlad III Dracula attempts to assassinate Mehmed II in The Night Attack, forcing Mehmed to retreat from Wallachia.

First mentioned as the " Citadel of București " in 1459, it became a residence of the Wallachian prince Vlad III the Impaler.

* August 20 – Vladislav II, reigning Prince of Wallachia, is killed in battle by Vlad III Dracula, who succeeds him.

Vlad III Dracula and Ivan the Terrible have passed into legend as major users of the method.

An even earlier example of a puppet state ( as well as a vassal state ) is Wallachia, which was partially de facto ruled by the Ottoman Empire from 1462 when Radu the Handsome was placed on the throne after his older brother Vlad III was banished from Wallachia and interned by Hungary.

The character of Count Dracula is thought by some to be based upon, Vlad Dracula III ' ( Vlad the Impaler ).

Later writings about the case have led to legendary accounts of the Countess bathing in the blood of virgins to retain her youth and subsequently also to comparisons with Vlad III the Impaler of Wallachia, on whom the fictional Count Dracula is partly based, and to modern nicknames of the Blood Countess and Countess Dracula.

During the 15th century, Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia, is credited as the first notable figure to prefer this method of execution during the late medieval period, and became so notorious for its liberal employment that among his several nicknames he was known as Vlad the Impaler.

The Wallachian prince Vlad Dracul ( father of Vlad the Impaler ( Dracula ), who lived in exile in the town, let coins to be minted in the city ( otherwise coinage was the monopoly of the Hungarian kings in the Kingdom of Hungary ) and issued the first document listing the city's Romanian name, Sighişoara.

That track in particular has been a regular of psychedelic bands through the decades including Australia's Prince Vlad & the Gargoyle Impalers in the early-to-mid 1980s.

At times Matthias had Vlad III the Impaler ( his second degree cousin, known to Romanians as Vlad Țepeș ), Prince of Wallachia, as his allied.

This character was created by the Irish fiction writer Bram Stoker, based on some stories spread in the late Middle Ages by the frustrated German trademen of Kronstadt ( Braṣov ) and on some Balkan folklore tales about the historic Romanian figure of Prince Vlad Ţepeş.

Under Vlad Vintilă, who allied himself with the Holy Roman Empire against his Ottoman overlords, Aloisio Gritti ( governor of Ottoman Hungary ) and his Wallachian boyar partisans camped in the Pitești neighborhood of Războieni, where they were attacked and defeated by the Prince.

Radu Florescu documented on page 193 of his book, " Dracula: Prince of Many Faces " that the Holy Roman Emperour Ferdinand I granted a patent of nobility January 20, 1535 to Ladislas Dracula and his brother John, affirming their direct descent from Vlad and making specific mention of " the ancient insignia of Ladislas's family " having been the same as that of the Bathory family -- i. e., gules ( red ) a sword covering three wolf teeth.

Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia ( 1431 – 1476 ), was a member of the House of Drăculești, a branch of the House of Basarab, also known by his patronymic name: Dracula.

In October 2011, Prince Charles publicly claimed that genealogy shows that he is a distant relative of Vlad the Impaler.

In Dracula: Prince of Many Faces, by Raymond T. McNally and Radu Florescu, it is claimed that Mehmed wanted to reconquer Belgrade in order to gain access to Hungary through the Danube River but was prevented from doing so by a humiliating defeat by Vlad III at The Night Attack.
