( Saberhagen depicts Dracula as the historical figure Vlad Ţepeş, who as woiwode of Wallachia was known as Drakulya, who in Saberhagen's stories became a vampire by simply refusing to die, " by a transcendent act of will " as the character describes it in the book.
This character was created by the Irish fiction writer Bram Stoker, based on some stories spread in the late Middle Ages by the frustrated German trademen of Kronstadt ( Braṣov ) and on some Balkan folklore tales about the historic Romanian figure of Prince Vlad Ţepeş.
