A wealthy Quaker named Reuben Haines proposed he and educator William Russell start a new school in Pennsylvania.

The earliest known written evidence of the title is from the November 3, 1863, diary entry of William Howard Russell, in which he referred to gossip about " the First Lady in the Land ," referring to Mary Todd Lincoln.

By the influence of William Russell, earl of Bedford, he was appointed one of the king's itinerant preachers in Lancashire, and after living for a time in Garstang, he was selected by the Lady Margaret Hoghton as vicar of Preston.
