Yule had broad interests and his collaborators included the agricultural meteorologist R. H. Hooker, the medical statistician Major Greenwood and the agricultural scientist Sir Frank Engledow.

Another theory by Yule and Burnell ( 1886 ) is based on an entry in the Catalogue of Indian Serpents from the Leyden Museum ( Ray, 1693 ) that reads: Anacondaia Zeylonensibus, id est Bubalorum aliorumque jumentorum membra conterens, meaning " the anacondaia of the Ceylonese, i. e. he that crushes the limbs of buffaloes and yoke beasts.

It was written by Henry Yule and Arthur C. Burnell and first published in 1886.

Burnell had died before the work was finished, and most of it was finished by Yule, who, however, deeply acknowledges Burnell's contributions.

Yule and Burnell were looking for a catchy title for their dictionary and decided upon this since it was a " typical and delightful example " of the type of the highly domesticated words in the dictionary and at the same time conveyed " a veiled intimation of dual authorship ".

In their 1886 dictionary, Hobson-Jobson, Sir Henry Yule and Arthur C. Burnell explained that the word came to be used in British India for several things the British had brought into the country, such as the tomato and soda water.

Burnell originated with Sir Henry Yule the well-known dictionary of Anglo-Indian words and phrases, Hobson-Jobson.
