The new minuscule was disseminated first from Aachen, of which the Ada Gospels provide classic models, and later from the influential scriptorium at Marmoutier Abbey ( Tours ), where Alcuin withdrew from court service as an abbot in 796 and restructured the scriptorium.

The Aachen Gospels may refer to either of two illuminated manuscript Gospel Books, more precisely known as the Aachen Coronation Gospels ( Aachen, Cathedral Treasury, s. n.

), a 9th century illuminated Gospel Book, or the Aachen Gospels of Otto III, made about 973 at Reichenau.

The plain term " Aachen Gospels " is more liely to refer to the former.

Both are important works of their respective periods ; The Aachen Coronation Gospels of Carolingian art and Otto's gospels of Ottonian art.
