In Canada the provinces of Atlantic Canada are known for being a home of Celtic music, most notably on the islands of Newfoundland, Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island.

Further, some older forms of Celtic music that are rare in Scotland and Ireland today, such as practice of accompanying a fiddle with a piano, or the Gaelic spinning songs of Cape Breton remain common in the Maritimes.

Cape Breton Island (-formerly Île Royale, Scottish Gaelic: Ceap Breatainn or Eilean Cheap Bhreatainn, Míkmaq: Únamakika, simply: Cape Breton ) is an island on the Atlantic coast of North America.

Cape Breton Island is part of the province of Nova Scotia, Canada.

The island is divided into four of Nova Scotia's eighteen counties: Cape Breton, Inverness, Richmond, and Victoria.

Cape Breton Island has experienced a decline in population of approximately 4. 4 % since the previous census in 2006.

Approximately 75 % of the island's population is located in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality ( CBRM ) which includes all of Cape Breton County and is often referred to as Industrial Cape Breton, given the history of coal mining and steel manufacturing in this area.

Cape Breton Island's first residents were likely Maritime Archaic natives, ancestors of the Mi ' kmaq, the latter of whom inhabited the island at the time of European discovery.

However, historians are unclear as to whether Cabot first visited Newfoundland or Cape Breton Island.

During the Anglo-French War ( 1627 – 1629 ), under Charles I, by 1629 the Kirkes took Quebec City, Sir James Stewart of Killeith, Lord Ochiltree planted a colony on Cape Breton Island at Baleine, Nova Scotia and Alexander ’ s son, William Alexander, 1st Earl of Stirling established the first incarnation of “ New Scotland ” at Port Royal.

In addition to Cape Breton Island, the French colony of Île Royale also included Île St .- Jean ( today called Prince Edward Island ).

The first permanently settled Scottish community on Cape Breton Island was Judique, settled in 1775 by Michael Mor MacDonald.

Barnard matriculated from the Beaufort West High School in 1940, and went to study medicine at the University of Cape Town Medical School, where he obtained his MB ChB in 1945.

He completed his Masters degree, receiving Master of Medicine in 1953 from the University of Cape Town.

He was promoted to full-time lecturer and Director of Surgical Research at the University of Cape Town.

Three years later he was appointed Head of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the teaching hospitals of the University of Cape Town.

He rose to the position of Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Cape Town in 1962.

He was promoted to Professor of Surgical Science in the Department of Surgery at the University of Cape Town in 1972.

In 1998, Ebrahim Moosa, a University of Cape Town academic who had been critical of PAGAD, decided to take a post in the United States after his home was bombed.

Later, Crow was awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Missouri and Southeast Missouri State University, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

Locally, the main Student Union buildings of the University of Cape Town are named in his honour and each year a commemorative Steve Biko lecture, open to all students, is delivered on the anniversary of his death.

Public hearings of the Human Rights Violations Committee and the Amnesty Committee were held at many venues around South Africa, including Cape Town ( at the University of the Western Cape ), Johannesburg ( at the Central Methodist Mission ), and Randburg ( at the Rhema Bible Church ).

Yellow glass with 1 % uranium oxide was found in a Roman villa on Cape Posillipo in the Bay of Naples, Italy by R. T. Gunther of the University of Oxford in 1912.

Located near Sydney, Cape Breton University ( CBU ) is the only post-secondary degree-granting institution on Cape Breton Island, its namesake.

As a collaborative player, CBU became a lead partner in the establishment of the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex.

A line running from Cape Aspro ( 28 ° 16 ' E ) in Asia Minor, to Cum Burnù ( Capo della Sabbia ) the Northeast extreme of the Island of Rhodes, through the island to Cape Prasonisi, the Southwest point thereof, on to Vrontos Point ( 35 ° 33 ' N ) in Skarpanto < nowiki >< nowiki ></ nowiki >, through this island to Castello Point, the South extreme thereof, across to Cape Plaka ( East extremity of Crete ), through Crete to Agria Grabusa, the Northwest extreme thereof, thence to Cape Apolitares in Antikithera Island, through the island to Psira Rock ( off the Northwest point ) and across to Cape Trakhili in Kithera Island, through Kithera to the Northwest point ( Cape Karavugia ) and thence to Cape Santa Maria () in the Morea.

There are, too, valuable timber trees, such as the Yellow-wood ( Podocarpus elongatus ), stinkwood ( Ocotea ), sneezewood or Cape ebony ( Pteroxylon utile ) and ironwood.

The clipper route, which is the fastest sailing route around the world, follows the ACC around three continental capes-Cape Agulhas ( Africa ), South East Cape ( Australia ) and Cape Horn ( South America ).

Boer (,, or ; ) is the Dutch and Afrikaans word for farmer, which came to denote the descendants of the Dutch-speaking settlers of the eastern Cape frontier in Southern Africa during the 18th century, as well as those who left the Cape Colony during the 19th century to settle in the Orange Free State, Transvaal ( which are together known as the Boer Republics ), and to a lesser extent Natal.

The islands are an important breeding site for seabirds including the Cape Verde Shearwater and Fea's Petrel ( Pterodroma feae ), which breeds only here and in Madeira.

As a result, Cape Verdeans are mulattos ( mestiços in Portuguese ), who have mixed African and European origins.

Cape Verde also is eligible for trade benefits under the African Growth and Opportunity Act ( AGOA ), and has signed an Open Skies agreement to facilitate air travel safety and expansion.

It is the island's largest commercial centre and home to the Cape Breton Post daily newspaper, as well as one television station, CJCB-TV ( CTV ), and several radio stations.
