According to Cicero, the Romans considered themselves the most religious of all peoples ; and their extraordinary success proved it.

Tully, especially as another name for Cicero, is an anglicized form now considered antiquated.

Later critics considered him superior to Cicero, and Tiberius adopted him as a model.

He was widely considered to be the author of the infamous Goldwater line, " Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice ; moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue ," but revealed that he had encountered it in a letter from Lincoln historian Harry Jaffa and later learned it was a paraphrase of a passage from Cicero.

According to the custom of that age in Italy, it now became his duty to explain the language, and to illustrate the beauties of the principal Latin authors, Cicero and Virgil being considered the chief masters of moral science and of elegant diction.

Cicero quoted Eratosthenes and considered him a reliable source on the matter.

Cicero considered the abolishment of nexum primarily a political maneuver to temporarily appease the plebeian masses, who by Cicero ’ s time ( almost 300 years after the Lex Poetelia Papiria ) had carried out three full-scale secessions:

Several sites were considered, and a track was built in suburban Cicero ( Chicago Motor Speedway ), but eventually attention turned to the Joliet area where Dale Coyne had negotiated to build Route 66 Raceway.

Likewise, " in the admiration of early Americans Cicero took pride of place as orator, political theorist, stylist, and moralist.

The British polemicist Thomas Gordon " incorporated Cicero into the radical ideological tradition that travelled from the mother country to the colonies in the course of the eighteenth century and decisively shaped early American political culture.

Roman political philosophy was influenced by the Stoics, including the Roman statesman Cicero.

Here serious drama and politics were blended with high and low comedy ; the plot centered on a love affair between Catiline and a daughter of Cicero as well as the historic political situation.

Cicero ( 106 BC – 43 BC ), full name Marcus Tullius Cicero, was a Roman statesman, lawyer, political theorist, philosopher and one of Rome's greatest orators.

Certainly, Cicero saw political vested interest, as detailed in his second speech.

Two letters ( Duae epistolae de republica ordinanda ), letters of political counsel and advice addressed to Caesar, and an attack upon Cicero ( Invectiva or Declamatio in Ciceronem ), frequently attributed to Sallust, are thought by modern scholars to have probably come from the pen of the rhetorician Marcus Porcius Latro, also the supposed author of a counter-invective attributed to Cicero.

Strauss quotes Cicero: " The Republic does not bring to light the best possible regime but rather the nature of political things – the nature of the city.

The marriages of Fulvia, who commanded troops during the last civil war of the Republic and who was the first Roman woman to have her face on a coin, are thought to indicate her own political sympathies and ambitions: she was married first to the popularist champion Clodius Pulcher, who was murdered in the street after a long feud with Cicero ; then to Scribonius Curio, a figure of less ideological certitude who at the time of his death had come over to Julius Caesar ; and finally to Mark Antony, the last opponent to the republican oligarchs and to Rome's future first emperor.

In these respects his early career demonstrates a generous and just nature, but also his political traditionalism in contrast to contemporaries such as Cicero and Pompey, the former of whom was always eager to avoid administrative responsibilities of any sort in the provinces, while Pompey rejected every aspect of a normal career, seeking great military commands at every opportunity which suited him, while refusing to undertake normal duties in peaceful provinces.

Instead of returning fully to political life ( although, as a friend of Cicero, he did act in some issues ,) he mostly retired to extravagant leisure, or, in Plutarch's words ,:

He finally triumphed in 63 BC thanks in small part to the political maneuveuring of both Cato and Cicero.
