The first of these, It's Always Fair Weather ( 1956 ) co-directed with Donen, was a musical satire on television and advertising, and includes his famous roller skate dance routine to " I Like Myself ", and a dance trio with Michael Kidd and Dan Dailey which allowed Kelly to experiment with the widescreen possibilities of Cinemascope.

Meanwhile, in order to compete with television and lure audiences away from their sets, producers of theatrical motion pictures began to use " widescreen " formats such as Cinemascope and Todd-AO in the early-to-mid 1950s, which enable more panoramic vistas and present other compositional opportunities.

The film was literally shot in two versions, the Todd-AO one, distributed by Mike Todd's Magna productions and RKO, and a Cinemascope one for theatres not able to handle Todd-AO, which at that time used a curved screen reminiscent of Cinerama, as well as six-track stereophonic sound.

The Cinemascope version, which made use of the standard rectangular Cinemascope screen and four-track stereo, was released by Twentieth Century-Fox a year after the Todd-AO version, and is the one that most audiences have seen.

The most notable addition was the GameDay Stadium, which shows an NFL Films production on a by Cinemascope screen.

In 1954, MGM produced an Eastmancolor version in Cinemascope, which more closely followed the original plot, but it still dropped most of Friml's songs.

Another exception was Franco Zeffirelli's hugely successful 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet, which, although photographed in beautiful settings and certainly having the look of an epic, was shown in most areas in monaural sound ( although its three soundtrack albums were all made in stereo ), and at a screen aspect ratio of 1. 66: 1 ; that is, roughly the width of today's average movie screen or HDTV screen, not the very wide screens required for films made in Ultra Panavision, Cinemascope, Todd-AO or any of the other ultrawide processes invented in the 1950s.

Retitled New Faces, the film version was directed by Harry Horner in Cinemascope and Eastmancolor, and released by Twentieth Century Fox on March 6, 1954.

By 1932, the Great Depression had forced studios to cut back on needless expense and it was not until 1953 that wider aspect ratios were again used in an attempt to stop the fall in attendance due, partially, to the emergence of television in the U. S. However, a few producers and directors, among them Alfred Hitchcock, have been reluctant to use the anamorphic widescreen size featured in such formats as Cinemascope.

A Cinemascope film version of Brigadoon, directed by Vincente Minnelli, was released by MGM in 1954 with Gene Kelly, Van Johnson and Cyd Charisse in leading roles.

The Cinemascope format was highlighted in the film's final aerial shot when it pulls back to frame a sprawling horizon showing both a freight train and a Continental Trailways bus separately bearing the two leading characters.

This was the studio's first motion picture to be filmed in Cinemascope.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Cinerama name was used as a film distribution company, ironically reissuing single strip 70 mm and 35 mm Cinemascope reduction prints of This Is Cinerama ( 1972 ).

In the 1956 Cinemascope Tom and Jerry cartoon, Blue Cat Blues, he was Jerry's voice who narrated the short ; he had also voiced Jerry's cousin Muscles in Jerry's Cousin five years earlier.

This technique was first introduced in September, 1953 by Hazard E. Reeves for Cinemascope.

This showed some commercial success as a limited location ( only in major cities ) exhibition of the technology in This is Cinerama, but the only memorable story-telling film of two made for this technology was How the West Was Won, widely seen only in its Cinemascope re-release.

The musical was made into a Cinemascope film in 1955 by MGM, directed by Vincente Minnelli and starring Howard Keel as Hajj, Ann Blyth as Marsinah, Dolores Gray as Lalume, and Vic Damone as the Caliph.

Stereoscopic 3-D was an alternative technology ( like Cinemascope and Cinerama ) used by 1950s studios attempting to compete with the new threat of television.

The Cinemascope movie was directed by Burt Balaban and Stuart Rosenberg.

The film had originally been made in Cinemascope 55 and was now re-released in a process called Grandeur 70.

The film was shot using both Cinemascope wide screen movie formatting and color by DeLuxe.

Critics felt that the film lacked star chemistry, with Burton having difficulty with the accent, and relied too heavily on Cinemascope special effects including an earthquake and a collapsing dam.

" After tricking him into selling them several dangerous ninja weapons ( parental permission is required if the hopeful buyer is under 18 ; Cartman uses this information to pretend that he, Kenny, Kyle and Stan are orphaned brothers, a ruse the boys have apparently successfully used " like twelve times " in the past ), they pretend to be ninjas, only to transform into anime-like characters with their own individual superpowers, as the animation style takes on an overall Japanese look and switches to a Cinemascope aspect ratio.

As a consequence the use of the Cinemascope 35mm four-track magnetic sound format decreased significantly during the course of the 1960s and effectively ended with the success of the Dolby Stereo optical stereo format in the late 1970s.

Technicolor became used far more frequently, and widescreen processes and technical improvements, such as Cinemascope, stereo sound and others such as 3-D, were invented in order to retain the dwindling audience and compete with television, but were generally not successful in increasing profits.

In 1953, he played Pontius Pilate in the first released Cinemascope film, The Robe.

John performed his first ceremony as a Master Mason for Jean Simmons in 1953, for the first premiere in Cinemascope of " The Robe ".

* February 16 – Only a little more than four months after the release of the 70mm version of Oklahoma !, the film version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel, starring Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones, is released in Cinemascope 55.

( 1955 ), previously released to select cities in Todd-AO, now receives a national release in Cinemascope, since not all theatres are yet equipped for Todd-AO.

Burton returned to Hollywood to star in Prince of Players, another historical Cinemascope film, this time concerning Edwin Booth, famous American actor and brother of Abraham Lincoln's assassin John Wilkes Booth.

Todd-AO adopted a similar multi-channel magnetic sound system to the one developed for Cinemascope two years earlier, recorded on " stripes " of magnetic oxide deposited on the film.

However Todd-AO has six channels instead of the four of Cinemascope and due to the wider stripes and faster film speed provides superior audio quality.

Picnic is a 1955 Cinemascope production, the film adapted for the screen by Daniel Taradash from William Inge ’ s 1953 Pulitzer Prize winning play.

In later years, it became possible to show a Todd-AO film on a Cinemascope screen without having to shoot two versions in two different formats.
