Derartu Tulu ( born March 21, 1972 in Bekoji, Arsi, Ethiopia ) is an Ethiopian long distance track, road and marathon athlete.

Meb Keflezighi of the United States won the men's race ( the first American since Alberto Salazar in 1982 ) with a time of 2: 09: 15 while Ethiopian Derartu Tulu took the women's crown in 2: 28: 52, the first Ethiopian woman to do so.

Derartu is the first black African woman to win a gold medal which she won in the 10, 000m event at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.

As of 2009, Derartu Tulu is still running competitively, while most of her old rivals are retired or retiring.

Like Fernanda Ribeiro in the 2000 Summer Olympics, defending champion Derartu Tulu was not able to maintain her title, finishing in the third place behind compatriot ( and cousin ) Ejegayehu Dibaba and the winner Xing Huina.

Fernanda Ribeiro, the 10000m champion from Atlanta ' 96 and in her fourth consecutive Olympics, couldn't keep her title away from the previous holder Derartu Tulu but still managed to reach the podium.

Asella has been the home of many Ethiopian track athletes, including Haile Gebrselassie, Kenenisa Bekele, Tirunesh Dibaba, and Derartu Tulu.

She finished a close second behind Derartu Tulu in the 10, 000 metres at the 2001 Goodwill Games.

In December 2009, a 96-page report titled Human Rights in Ethiopia: Through the Eyes of the Oromo Diaspora, compiled by the Advocates for Human Rights, documented human rights violations against the Oromo in Ethiopia under three successive regimes: the Abyssinian Empire under Haile Selassie, the Marxist Derg and the current Ethiopian government of the Ethiopian People ’ s Revolutionary Democratic Front ( EPRDF ), dominated by members of the Tigray People ’ s Liberation Front ( TPLF ) and which was accused to have arrested approximately 20, 000 suspected OLF members, to have driven most OLF leadership into exile, and to have effectively neutralized the OLF as a political force in Ethiopia.

It is a sociolinguistic language, consisting of four varieties: Borana – Arsi – Guji Oromo, Eastern Oromo ( also called Qottu ), Orma, and West Central Oromo.
