The first, most important and successful was The Beggar's Opera of 1728, with a libretto by John Gay and music arranged by John Christopher Pepusch, both of whom probably influenced by Parisian vaudeville and the burlesques and musical plays of Thomas D ' Urfey ( 1653 – 1723 ), a number of whose collected ballads they used in their work.

The emerging Brandenburg-Prussian military potential, based on the introduction of a standing army in 1653, was symbolized by the widely noted victories in Warsaw ( 1656 ) and Fehrbellin ( 1675 ) and by the Great Sleigh Drive ( 1678 ).

Cromwell later convened a parliament of religious radicals in 1653, commonly known as the Barebone's Parliament, followed by the unicameral First Protectorate Parliament that sat from September 1654 to January 1655 and the Second Protectorate Parliament that sat in two sessions between 1656 and 1658, the first session was unicameral and the second session was bicameral.

He took a leading part in Parliament: he was elected to Parliament for Cornwall in 1604 and 1656 ; for Truro 1626, 1640 ( twice ) and 1654 ; for Tregony 1628 ; and for Devon 1653.

The government would still introduce new time frames and grounds for search of the runaways after 1649, which applied to the peasants who had fled to the outlying districts of the country, such as regions along the border abatises called zasechniye linii ( засечные линии ) ( ukases of 1653 and 1656 ), Siberia ( ukases of 1671, 1683 and 1700 ), Don ( 1698 ) etc.

George Booth was nominated to the Barebones Parliament for Cheshire in 1653 and was elected MP for Cheshire in the First Protectorate Parliament in 1654 and in the Second Protectorate Parliament in 1656.

From 1653 to 1659, although still legally known as a Commonwealth, the republic operated under different institutions ( at times as a de facto monarchy ) and is known by historians as the Protectorate.

The countries that now make up the United Kingdom, together with the present Republic of Ireland, were briefly ruled as a republic in the 17th century, first under the Commonwealth consisting of the Rump Parliament and the Council of State, ( 1649 – 53 ) and then under the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell ( 1653 – 58 ).
