The first translation into Yiddish was by Osip Mikhailovich Lerner, who staged the play at the Mariinski Theater in Odessa, Ukraine ( then part of Imperial Russia ) in 1881, shortly after the assassination of Tsar Alexander II.

The prototype of Ostap Bender was Osip Shor, a brother of a Russian poet-futurist Natan Shor.

Osip Shor was a person of adventurous life and a good story-teller.

Nadezhda Yakovlevna Mandelstam (, née Khazina ; 29 December 1980 ) was a Russian writer and educator, and the wife of the poet Osip Mandelstam, who died in 1938 in a transit camp to the gulag of Siberia.

A masterpiece of prose as well as a model of biographical narrative and social analysis it is mainly the story of the terrible last years of persecution and torment before the poet husband Osip was murdered.

Osip was arrested in 1934 for his poem entitled " Stalin Epigram " and exiled to Cherdyn, in Perm Oblast ; Nadezhda went with him.

She was not allowed to return to Moscow until 1964, following the first phase of Osip Mandelstam's rehabilitation ( under Nikita Khrushchev ).
