A daughter, Rebecca Sherman, was married to Simeon Baldwin, whose career included service in the United States Congress ( 1803 – 1806 ), as an Associate Judge of the Connecticut Superior Court, 1806 – 1817, and who became Mayor of New Haven, Connecticut in 1826.

It was characteristic of him that when shortly before his retirement the method of teaching was changed to the so-called " case system ," to which Judge Baldwin, like most of his contemporaries, objected, he never for an instant changed his attitude of loyalty to the school, which some years later was to be most generously remembered in his will.
