Brought up in the cloistered world of Jordan College, Oxford, she finds herself embroiled in a cosmic war between Lord Asriel on the one side, and the first angel to come into being, called The Authority, and his Regent, called Metatron, on the other.

Lyra Belacqua, age twelve at the beginning of the trilogy, is the daughter of Lord Asriel and Marisa Coulter in an Oxford similar to our own.

She was raised believing that her parents had died in an airship crash, and that Lord Asriel was her uncle, and later learned the truth from John Faa, leader of the Gyptians.

Lyra's inevitable betrayal can be interpreted as two separate occasions and either occurs when Lyra leads her friend Roger to Lord Asriel on Svalbard at the end of the first book, in the chapter titled " Betrayal ", or when Lyra leaves her dæmon on the shore of the lake in the Land of the Dead.

The book focuses more on the characters and their own individual plots, rather than just on Lyra's father, Lord Asriel, and his war against the Magisterium.

There, Will encounters 12-year-old Lyra Silvertongue and her daemon Pantalaimon, who came here after entering the hole in the sky that her father, Lord Asriel, created at the end of Northern Lights.

The witches vote to band together and join Lyra's father, Lord Asriel, in his fight against the Magisterium.

Will returns to camp to find a pair of angels, Balthamos and Baruch, waiting to guide him to Lord Asriel.

As the second novel of the His Dark Materials trilogy, the book has also formed part of a radio drama on BBC Radio 4 starring Terence Stamp as Lord Asriel and Lulu Popplewell as Lyra, and as a two-part, six-hour performance for London's Royal National Theatre in December 2003, running until March 2004, and a second run between November 2004 and April 2005.

In Cittàgazze, two angels, Balthamos and Baruch, tell Will, the bearer of the Subtle Knife, that they are taking him to Lord Asriel.

Baruch flies to Lord Asriel to tell him what has happened and to get help.

In Northern Lights, Lord Asriel reveals the origins of the term " Dust " to be from a passage from the slightly alternate version of the Bible in Lyra's World: " In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground ; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

At the beginning of the trilogy, Lord Asriel claims that the act of settling triggers Dust to begin to be attracted to the person.

The separation process also releases a huge burst of energy, which was used by Lord Asriel to create a bridge into the world containing Cittàgazze.

Lord Asriel was a highly respected member of the British ( Brytish ) aristocracy.

Lord Asriel killed him in a duel.

Lord Asriel, who hated the church, arrived one day and took Lyra to his almamater, Jordan College, where she was placed in the care of the Master.

After travelling to the South, Lord Asriel visited Jordan College where he was almost poisoned by the Master, who read his alethiometer and saw that Lord Asriel's actions would be dangerous.

And it is clearly argued by Lord Percy of Newcastle, in his remarkable long essay, The Heresy Of Democracy, and in a more general way by Voegelin, in his New Science Of Politics, that this same Rousseauan idea, descending through European democracy, is the source of Marx's theory of the dictatorship of the proletariat.
