The village of Markfield has three pubs – The Red Lion, The Queens Head and The Bulls Head – and a Travelodge hotel ; the parish contains a fourth pub – the Coach and Horses in Field Head.

Markfield has a well-funded and run Community Centre which has just been extended and refurbished.

This Centre was built in 1985 and in time has replaced the old Markfield Memorial Miners Institute as the main community building in the village.

Markfield has close links with the Methodist movement and was often a stopping point for its founder John Wesley ( see blue plaque on parish church ) He was allowed to preach in the parish church but as his visits became popular he would preach on the village green.

Today Markfield has the parish church of St Michaels and all Angels, Holy Trinity Methodist chapel and the Congregational church.

Markfield has a long association with the quarrying industry and has a particular type of granite ( microdiorite ) named after it.

Several hairdressers, a post office and village hall are also key amenties for the suburb, A new shop has been added to Ratby on Markfield Road called The Convenience store and next to this is a Chinese, one of Ratby's two Chinese take aways.

Despite the end of coal mining in west Leicestershire in the 1980s, which resulted in the end of the coal trains, the railway continues to serve two granite quarries, at Stud Farm near Markfield and Bardon Hill, which produce regular heavy trains.

The Markfield Beam Engine is a 100 horsepower beam pumping engine, built in 1886 to transfer sewage from the Middlesex district of Tottenham into the London system for treatment at the Beckton works.

The Markfield Beam Engine itself was built between 1886 and 1888.

MOTAT 1 was built around the site of a beam engine pump house, which originally provided Auckland's water supply ( system similar to the Crofton Pumping Station and Markfield Beam Engine ).

This is extensively quarried for roadstone around Groby, Markfield and Whitwick, and is known as granite ( formerly also called Markfieldite )..

The M1 North can be reached in minutes along the A50 towards Markfield, Groby and Coalville.

Diorite is a relatively rare rock ; source localities include Leicestershire ; UK ( one name for microdiorite-Markfieldite-exists due to the rock being found in the village of Markfield ), Sondrio, Italy ; Thuringia and Saxony in Germany ; Finland ; Romania ; Northeastern Turkey ; central Sweden ; Scotland ; the Darrans range of New Zealand ; the Andes Mountains ; the Isle of Guernsey ; Basin and Range province ; Minnesota in the USA, and Idahet in Egypt.

The engine is housed in a Grade II listed building, " Engine House No. 2 ", and, having been restored to working order, the engine is the main feature of Markfield Museum.

The museum is sited on the northern edge of Markfield Park, a large public open space.

Thus pumping of sewage would no longer be required at the Markfield Works.

Haringey Council planned a major project to regenerate Markfield Park.

A train loaded with granite chippings from the Stud Farm quarry ( at Markfield ) moves on to the former Leicester and Swannington Railway at Battleflat, just to the north of Bagworth.
