This organization was started at the University of Florida in 1923 under the presidency of Albert Murphree.

At the suggestion of President Albert E. Murphree, Bert C. Riley, Dean of General Extension, brought together a group of student leaders to form an organization which would recognize leadership and promote service to the University.

In 1909, Albert Murphree was appointed the second president of the university, and organized several of the colleges of the university, increased enrollment from under 200 to over 2, 000, and he was instrumental in the founding of the Florida Blue Key leadership society.

On the east side are the Racquet Club fitness center, Florida Gym and Murphree Hall, one of the oldest residence halls on campus.

In 1927 Bilbo was elected Governor again after winning the Democratic primary in a runoff election over Governor Dennis Murphree.

Bilbo criticized Murphree for calling out the National Guard to prevent a lynching in Jackson, declaring that no black person was worthy of protection by the Guard.

Dennis Herron Murphree ( January 6, 1886February 9, 1949 ) was a Mississippi politician.

In March 1927, he became Governor of Mississippi after the death of incumbent Henry L. Whitfield and served for about ten months until Theodore G. Bilbo, who defeated Murphree in the Democratic Party primary by 10, 000 votes, was sworn into office in January 1928.

Paul B. Johnson, Sr. in December 1943, Murphree finished out the three weeks left in Johnson's term, serving until the swearing in of Thomas L. Bailey in January 1944.

Dennis Murphree conceived the idea of the Know Mississippi Better train in 1925, in response to Governor Whitfield's wish to create an exposition of Mississippi to the rest of the country.
