Much of the activities of the " Go Beyond Oil " campaign have been focused on drilling for oil in the Arctic and areas affected by the Deepwater Horizon disaster.

On August 28, 1859, George Bissell and Edwin L. Drake made the first successful use of a drilling rig on a well drilled especially to produce oil, at a site on Oil Creek near Titusville, Pennsylvania.

Initially calling their venture Dramatic Oil ( later renaming it Fuller Farm Oil ), the partners invested in a site along the Allegheny River at Franklin, Pennsylvania, in late 1863 for drilling.

But Humble Oil still faced stiff competition from such national brands such as Shell and Texaco, which at that time was the only company to market under one brand name in all 50 states.

A figure of was a commonly accepted estimate of the spill's volume and has been used by the State of Alaska's Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and environmental groups such as Greenpeace and the Sierra Club.
