Linguistic study of the Khmer language divides its history into four periods one of which, the Old Khmer period, is subdivided into pre-Angkorian and Angkorian.

Old Khmer is attested by many primary sources and has been studied in depth by a few scholars, most notably Saveros Pou, Phillip Jenner and Heinz-Jürgen Pinnow.

The changes during this period are so profound that the rules of Modern Khmer can not be applied to correctly understand Old Khmer.

Some words in Thai are borrowed from Pali, Sanskrit and Old Khmer.

The Thai alphabet is derived from the Old Khmer script (, akkhara khamen ), which is a southern Brahmic style of writing called Vatteluttu.

Thai, spoken in Thailand and some areas of Laos, Burma and China, is written with its own script, probably descended from mixture of Tai – Laotian and Old Khmer, in the Brahmic family.

Hinduism in Southeast Asia gave birth to the former Champa civilization in southern parts of Central Vietnam, Funan in Cambodia, the Khmer Empire in Indochina, Langkasuka Kingdom, Gangga Negara and Old Kedah in the Malay Peninsula, the Srivijayan kingdom on Sumatra, the Singhasari kingdom and the Majapahit Empire based in Java, Bali, and parts of the Philippine archipelago.

However, Old Khmer, or Angkorian Khmer, also possessed separate symbols for the numbers 10, 20, and 100.

As both Thai and Lao script are derived from Old Khmer, their modern forms still bear many resemblances to the latter, demonstrated in the table below:
