After Rabbi Yitzchak Meir's death in 1866, his Hasidim wanted his eighteen-year old grandson, Rabbi Yehudah Aryeh Leib Alter, to succeed him.

When Rabbi Yehuda Aryeh Leib refused to accept this position, most of the Hasidim became followers of the elderly Hasid, Rabbi Chanokh Heynekh HaKohen Levin, formerly rabbi of Prushnits and Krushnevits and now retired to Alexander.

After Rabbi Chanokh Heynekh died in 1870, Rabbi Yehudah Aryeh Leib ( who became known posthumously as the Sfas Emes ) acceded to the request of the Hasidim to become their next rebbe.

Traditional and current Orthodox thought have mainly held that the Messiah will be the anointed one ( messiah ), descended from his father through the Davidic line of King David via Solomon ( See Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan ), who will gather the Jews back into the Land of Israel, usher in an era of peace, build the Third Temple, have a male heir and re-institute the Sanhedrin, among other things.

Rabbi Moshe Tendler, a leading rabbi at Yeshiva University, stated " It is very sad that an individual who attended our yeshiva sunk to the depths of what we consider a depraved society ,"

These four are all roshei yeshiva ( i. e., rabbinic leaders ) at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary at Yeshiva University, the largest and most influential Modern Orthodox rabbinic program in America.

Although Rabbi Lipschutz has faced some controversy in certain Hasidic circles, he was greatly respected by such sages as Rabbi Akiva Eiger, whom he frequently cites, and is widely accepted in the Yeshiva world.

In Pardes Rimonim, Moses ben Jacob Cordovero ( Ramak ) mentions a minority opinion that Rabbi Akiva authored it, and takes it to mean Abraham wrote it and Akiva redacted it to its current form.

According to his own testimony in the introduction to " Pardes Rimonim ", in 1542, at the age of twenty, Ramak heard a " Heavenly voice " urging him to study Kabbalah with his brother-in-law, Rabbi Shlomo Alkabetz, composer of the mystical song Lecha Dodi.

The Musar Institute, founded by Alan Morinis, and the Mussar Leadership Program, founded by Rabbi Ira F. Stone, are among the institutions which have sought to spread the practice of Musar in a non-Orthodox framework.
