Route 21 is a highway in northern New Jersey, running from the Newark Airport Interchange with U. S. Route 1 / 9 and U. S. Route 22 in Newark, Essex County to an interchange with U. S. Route 46 in Clifton, Passaic County.
The portion of Route 21 through Newark is a surface arterial that follows the Northeast Corridor rail line through the southern part of the city and continues north through Downtown Newark while the portion north of Downtown Newark is a freeway.

Route and comes
It intersects the northern terminus of County Route 567 ( First Avenue ) before heading into business areas, where it comes to the modified Somerville Circle, where Route 28 intersects U. S. Route 202 and U. S. Route 206.
Here, the road comes to junctions with County Route 619 ( Locust Street ) and County Route 627 ( Chestnut Street ) before heading into residential areas.
Upon leaving the grounds of Naval Weapons Station Earle, the route widens into a four-lane divided highway again and comes to a cloverleaf interchange with the Route 18 freeway.
It continues through suburban development and comes to the Asbury Park Circle where the route intersects County Route 16 ( Asbury Avenue ), crosses into Ocean Township, and intersects the eastern terminus of Route 66.
