U. S. Route 101E ( east ) generally followed the right-of-way taken by today's I-880 from San Jose to Oakland, then across the Carquinez Bridge to follow what is now California State Route 37, joining US 101W.

In 1953, Route 35 was realigned to run from Point Pleasant to Seaside Heights along a former part of Route 37, with Route 35 between Lakewood and Point Pleasant becoming Route 88.

In Seaside Heights, Route 35 turns north and interchanges with Route 37 on the Seaside Heights / Berkeley Township border on the eastern shore of Barnegat Bay.

Past the Route 37 interchange, Route 35 continues north along Barnegat Bay, curving eastward and crossing into Toms River Township, where the route splits into a block-wide one-way pair with two lanes in each direction that heads north through residential and commercial Ortley Beach.

In the 1953 New Jersey state highway renumbering, the portion of Route 35 between Lakewood and Point Pleasant became Route 88 and Route 35 was designated to head south from Point Pleasant to Seaside Heights on what had been a part of Route 37.

Orange County, Lake County and Osceola County share a common border that is located at the intersection of the westbound lane of Route 192 near Bali Boulevard ; Lake County, Osceola County and Polk County share a common border across the street, about 15 yards away, at the eastbound lane of Route 192 near Bali Boulevard.

Going westbound, exit 4 leaves to the right for County Route 637 and Warren Glen.

An east-west route, U. S. Route 50 circumvents Belpre and Lewis before joining with westbound U. S. Route 56 in Kinsley.

The route has an interchange with Route 3, with access to eastbound Route 3 and U. S. Route 1 / 9 for traffic in the eastbound direction and to westbound Route 3 in the westbound direction.

Past this interchange, Route 495 becomes a six-lane, freeway maintained by the New Jersey Department of Transportation that intersects U. S. Route 1 / 9 at a partial interchange, with a westbound exit and eastbound entrance.

There is an eastbound exit and westbound entrance for Park Avenue, which provides access to Weehawken and Hoboken, where Route 495 becomes a freeway maintained by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The route has a westbound exit for County Route 677 ( John F. Kennedy / Hudson Boulevard East ) and another exit for Boulevard East with a westbound exit and eastbound entrance.

A short distance later, at the second intersection with Old South Avenue, the route becomes state-maintained again and continues past businesses, intersecting County Route 655 ( Martine Avenue ) before it heads into residential neighborhoods and meets County Route 601 ( Laurel Place ).

After the intersection with Route 439, the route continues past urban residences and business, narrowing into a two-lane undivided road at the intersection with County Route 618 ( Magie Avenue ).

At that point, Route 38 was proposed as a highway from Camden ( where it would end ), past its former terminus at State Highway Route 39 to an intersection with State Highway Route 4-N in the community of Wall Township east of Fort Dix.

Route 21 comes to a northbound exit and southbound entrance for Grafton Avenue and Mill Street, briefly becoming a double-decker freeway again past that interchange before crossing into Belleville at the Second River crossing.

Immediately past this interchange, the road intersects County Route 30 before coming to a cloverleaf interchange with Interstate 195 and Route 138.

Route 35 continues west past numerous businesses and runs through Hazlet before crossing into Keyport.

Route 27 continues north on St. Georges Avenue past the terminus of Route 35.

The concurrency, an important and busy regional artery, continues past Newark Liberty International Airport and over the Pulaski Skyway, finally leaving the state along with Route 1 and I-95 via the George Washington Bridge.

Route 7 goes along Great Russell Street, past the British Museum, and on to Russell Square.

Route 19 continues past the Garden State Parkway as a six-lane freeway surrounded by trees, coming to a northbound exit and southbound entrance with County Route 509.

A short distance past this intersection, the road becomes a four-lane undivided road that crosses New Jersey Transit ’ s Pascack Valley Line before coming to an interchange with Route 17.

The route crosses County Route 513 ( Dover-Chester Road ), skirting several residential neighborhoods and passing by the County College of Morris past that intersection, with businesses along the road becoming more frequent again.

The route crosses County Route 527 ( Livingston Avenue ) and narrows to two lanes a short distance past that intersection.

Most of the population is centered around Route 23, especially near Lake Garfield.

U. S. Route 46 and County Route 507 pass through Garfield.

As the Parkway continues to the northeast, it interchanges with Route 46 again in Garfield.
