The first mention of the language as the " Bulgarian language " instead of the " Slavonic language " comes in the work of the Greek clergy of the Bulgarian Archbishopric of Ohrid in the 11th century, for example in the Greek hagiography of Saint Clement of Ohrid by Theophylact of Ohrid ( late 11th century ).

The Republic of Venice patronized the foundation of the Biblioteca Marciana, based on the library of Cardinal Basilios Bessarion. In Milan Cardinal Federico Borromeo founded the Biblioteca Ambrosiana.

Their cultural heritage was acquired and developed in medieval Bulgaria, where after 885 the region of Ohrid became a significant ecclesiastical center with the nomination of the Saint Clement of Ohrid for " first archbishop in Bulgarian language " with residence in this region.

Travelling with the relics of Saint Clement and a retinue of disciples, and passing through Pannonia ( the Balaton Principality ), where they were well received by Prince Koceľ ( Kocelj, Kozel ), they arrived in Rome in 868, where they were warmly received.

This was partly due to their bringing with them the relics of Saint Clement ; the rivalry with Constantinople as to the jurisdiction over the territory of the Slavs would incline Rome to value the brothers and their influence.

96 ), also known as Saint Clement of Rome ( in Latin, Clemens Romanus ), is listed from an early date as a Bishop of Rome.

According to Tertullian, Clement was consecrated by Saint Peter, and he is known to have been a leading member of the church in Rome in the late 1st century.

The Liber Pontificalis, which documents the reigns of popes, states that Clement had known Saint Peter.

As punishment, Saint Clement was martyred by being tied to an anchor and thrown from a boat into the Black Sea.

A year or two before his own death in 869, Saint Cyril brought to Rome what he believed to be the relics of Saint Clement, bones he found in the Crimea buried with an anchor on dry land.

Other relics of Saint Clement, including his head, are claimed by the Kiev Monastery of the Caves in Ukraine.

Early succession lists name Clement as the first, second, or third successor of Saint Peter.

The Syriac Orthodox Church, the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and the Greek Orthodox Church, as well as the Syriac Catholic Church, the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church and all Byzantine Rite Eastern Catholic Churches, commemorate Saint Clement of Rome ( called in Syriac " Mor Clemis ") on 24 November ; the Russian Orthodox Church commemorates St Clement on 25 November.

The latter two completed his design for an altarpiece of the Vision of Saint Nicholas ( San Nicola da Tolentino, Rome ) using two separate marble pieces linked together in one event and place, yet successfully separating the divine and earthly spheres.

Other pilgrimage centres include Saint Francis Xavier's birthplace in Navarra, Church of Il Gesu, Rome, Malacca ( where he was buried for 2 years, before being brought to Goa ), Sancian ( Place of death ) etc.
