While Tacitus called it Mare Suebicum after the Germanic people of the Suebi, the first to name it also as the Baltic Sea ( Mare Balticum ) was eleventh century German chronicler Adam of Bremen.

The Black Sea is also connected to the Sea of Azov by the Strait of Kerch.

The first part of its name refers to Atlas of Greek mythology, making the Atlantic the " Sea of Atlas ".

In Italian, possibly following a tradition of antiquity, the Arcipelago ( from medieval Greek * ἀρχιπέλαγος ) was the proper name for the Aegean Sea and, later, usage shifted to refer to the Aegean Islands ( since the sea is remarkable for its large number of islands ).

Bœotus ( accompanied by Arne ) went to southern Thessaly, and founded Boeotia ; but Aeolus went to a group of islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea, which received from him the name of the Aeolian Islands ; according to some accounts this Aeolus founded the town of Lipara.

The " goat-man " who gave his name to the Aegean Sea was, next to Poseidon, the father of Theseus, the founder of Athenian institutions and one of the kings of Athens.

In the Middle Ages the sea was known by variety of names, the name Baltic Sea started to dominate only after 16th century.

It is also possible that the name Axeinos arose by popular etymology from a Scythian Iranic axšaina-' unlit ,' ' dark '; the designation " Black Sea " may thus date from Antiquity.

English-language writers of the 18th century often used the name " Euxine Sea " ( or ) to describe the Black Sea.

One of the incidents which led to the creation of the Basel Convention was the Khian Sea waste disposal incident, in which a ship carrying incinerator ash from the city of Philadelphia in the United States after having dumped half of its load on a beach in Haiti, was forced away where it sailed for many months, changing its name several times.

Since the early 20th century it has been commonly accepted that Old Irish Bel ( l ) taine is derived from a Common Celtic * belo-te ( p ) niâ, meaning " bright fire " ( where the element * belo-might be cognate with the English word bale in ' bale-fire ' meaning ' white ' or ' shining '; compare Anglo-Saxon bael, and Lithuanian / Latvian baltas / balts, found in the name of the Baltic ; in Slavic languages byelo or beloye also means ' white ', as in Беларусь ( White Russia or Belarus ) or Бе ́ лое мо ́ ре Sea ).

Although he must have been familiar with the ancient name, Balcia, meaning a supposed island in the Baltic Sea, and although he may have been aware of the Baltic words containing the stem balt -, " white ", as " swamp ", he reports that he followed the local use of balticus from baelt (" belt ") because the sea stretches to the east " in modum baltei " (" in the manner of a belt ").

The Soviet code name, Operation Anadyr, was also the name of a river flowing into the Bering Sea, the name of the capital of Chukotsky District, and a bomber base in the far eastern region.

After the discovery of the West Indies by Christopher Columbus in 1492, the Spanish term Antillas was assigned to the lands ; stemming from this, " Sea of the Antilles " is a common alternative name for the Caribbean Sea in various European languages.

The Greek name ( Hellespontos ) means “ Sea of Helle ”, and was the ancient name of the narrow strait.

August Heinrich Hoffmann ( who called himself Hoffmann von Fallersleben after his home town to distinguish himself from others with the same common name of " Hoffmann ") wrote the text in 1841 on vacation on the North Sea island Heligoland, then a possession of the United Kingdom.
