Sonic Team are best known for the Sonic the Hedgehog series.

In 1990, Sega asked to create a game with a character that was popular enough to rival Nintendo's Mario, resulting in the creation of Sonic the Hedgehog.

In 1991 AM8 took its name from the Sonic the Hedgehog series and became Sonic Team.

Following the release of Sonic The Hedgehog, Yuji Naka grew dissatisfied with Sega Japan's policies and so moved to Sega of America to work in the offices of the newly established Sega Technical Institute, headed by Mark Cerny.

The American developers collaborated with Sonic Team in the development of Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

The Sega Dreamcast followed in 1998, and launched with the return of Sonic the Hedgehog in Sonic Adventure.

In 2009, the director of Sonic Unleashed and creator of the Hedgehog Engine, Yoshihisa Hashimoto, left Sonic Team to move to Square Enix.

In 2010, it was confirmed that Dimps, developers of the Sonic Advance and Sonic Rush titles, would be co-developing Sonic the Hedgehog 4 with Sonic Team.

While the original Sonic the Hedgehog was developed in Japan by Sonic Team, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was developed by Sonic Team in the US with several members of Sega Technical Institute assisting.

The game is a sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and follows on directly from the end of the game, in which Sonic defeated his enemy, Dr. Robotnik ; crash-landing on a floating island, Sonic encounters new character Knuckles the Echidna, and must once more retrieve the Chaos Emeralds while also working to stop Dr. Robotnik from relaunching his ship, the Death Egg.

* Miles " Tails " Prower, a character in the Sonic the Hedgehog video games and comics

Sonic and his new sidekick Miles " Tails " Prower, must stop Robotnik from discovering the Chaos Emeralds and completing his new weapon, the " Death Egg ".

Much of Sonic Adventure centers on Sonic, a hedgehog who has the ability to run at supersonic speeds, and Miles " Tails " Prower, a two-tailed fox who often accompanies Sonic on his adventures ; they are the main characters of the game who are in pursuit of Eggman.

The next day, Sonic rescues Miles " Tails " Prower after Tails crash-lands in the city while testing his Chaos Emerald-powered plane.

The Chao raising feature was expanded in Sonic Adventure 2 ; Chao may become " Hero Chao " or " Dark Chao " depending on whether the game's " hero " characters ( Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles " Tails " Prower, and Knuckles the Echidna ) or " dark " characters ( Shadow the Hedgehog, Doctor Ivo Robotnik, and Rouge the Bat ) are nicer to them.

The " Bridge Zone " theme was also later sampled in Sonic Adventure, for the Miles " Tails " Prower theme song, " Believe in Myself " by Karen Brake.

It follows the protagonist team of Sonic the Hedgehog, Knuckles the Echidna, and Miles " Tails " Prower and the antagonist team of Doctor Eggman, Shadow the Hedgehog, and Rouge the Bat and their attempt to work together in order to save the world from destruction.
