The lives of numerous abbots make up a significant contribution to Christian hagiography, one of the most well-known being the Life of St. Benedict of Nursia by St. Gregory the Great.

( The later pope St. Gregory I the Great is not known to have composed any Gregorian chant, the plainsong or " Romish chant ".

Remarkably, Alfred, undoubtedly with the advice and aid of his court scholars, translated four works himself: Gregory the Great's Pastoral Care, Boethius's Consolation of Philosophy, St. Augustine's Soliloquies, and the first fifty psalms of the Psalter.

This order is known from a bull of Pope Gregory XI addressed to the monks of the church of St Ambrose outside Milan.

In 1375 Pope Gregory XI gave them the Rule of St Augustine, with set of constitutions.

The first Archbishop of Canterbury was St Augustine ( not to be confused with St Augustine of Hippo ), who arrived in Kent in 597 AD, having been sent by Pope Gregory I on a mission to the English.

Within few years of his departure, St. Gregory of Nazianzus called him the " Pillar of the Church ".

Gregory did not set out to write a chronological, historically anchored story of St. Benedict, but he did base his anecdotes on direct testimony.

These followers, he says, are Constantinus, who succeeded Benedict as Abbot of Monte Cassino ; Valentinianus ; Simplicius ; and Honoratus, who was abbot of Subiaco when St Gregory wrote his Dialogues.

Four of the most notable English Abbeys are the Basilica of St Gregory the Great at Downside, commonly known as Downside Abbey, Ealing Abbey in Ealing, West London and St. Lawrence's in Yorkshire ( Ampleforth Abbey ) and Worth Abbey which has appeared in two BBC2 TV programmes ; ' The Monastery ( BBC TV series )' and ' The Big Silence '.

St. Gregory VII having, indeed, abridged the order of prayers, and having simplified the Liturgy as performed at the Roman Court, this abridgment received the name of Breviary, which was suitable, since, according to the etymology of the word, it was an abridgment.

Jerome's first revision of the Itala ( A. D. 383 ), known as the Roman, is still used at St Peter's in Rome, but the " Gallican ", thanks especially to St Gregory of Tours, who introduced it into Gaul in the 6th century, has ousted it everywhere else.

It does not appear that St. Paul had visited this city when he wrote his Epistle to the Colossians (, ), since he tells Philemon of his hope to visit it upon being freed from prison ( see Philemon 1: 22 ).

Eastern Orthodox tradition tells that the pagans directed the stream of a river against the sanctuary of St. Michael there to destroy it, but Michael the Archangel appeared and split the rock by lightning to give a new bed to the stream, diverting the flow away from the church and sanctifying forever the waters which came from the gorge.

Altfrid tells the same story of St. Liudger.

A late-14th-century edition of the Mirabilia Urbis Romae, a guidebook for pilgrims to Rome, tells readers that the female Pope's remains are buried at St. Peter's.

As also mentioned by Kirby Page in Jesus or Christianity, Charles Loring Brace tells us in Gesta Christ that it was not until the 9th Century that the first recorded stand against slavery itself was taken by St. Theodore.

He also had a reputation for a fierce temper, and he could be intimidating ; one story tells of how the Dean of St Paul's, wishing to confront Edward over the high level of taxation in 1295, fell down and died once he was in the king's presence.

St. Gregory the Great, in his Dialogues, tells us that she was a nun and leader of a community for women at Plombariola, about five miles from Benedict's abbey at Monte Cassino.

Meet Me in St. Louis is a 1944 musical film from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer which tells the story of an American family living in St. Louis at the time of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition World's Fair in 1904.

He is also shown to be capable of recognizing literature ; in the last episode of season five, he paraphrases a line from the St. Crispin's Day Speech while in conversation with Giles after Buffy tells them her plan of attack on Glory.

Jocelin's 12th century Life and Acts of St. Patrick tells much the same story.

The historical site includes the home where the world-famous aviator spent summers next to the Mississippi River and also a visitor's center that tells the Lindbergh family story and displays a full size replica of The Spirit of St. Louis cockpit.

It was also spoofed on an episode of The Golden Girls, in which Rose Nylund ( Betty White ) tells a story about two dancers from her hometown of St. Olaf, Minnesota, Adolf Stepp and Olga Fetchik, who became " the internationally renowned Scandinavian dance team of Stepp ' n ' Fetchik ".

It tells the story of three generations of Gullah women in the Peazant family on St. Helena Island in 1902, as the younger ones prepare to migrate to the North.

# The Renaissance " French " story ( 1572 ) tells of the religious intolerance that led to the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre of Huguenots by Roman Catholic royals.

St. Augustine of Hippo, in his Confessions 6. 2. 2, tells the story of his mother making offerings for the statues and tombs of martyrs.

Shakespeare, Selden and Chapman were among the few friends allowed to visit his secluded home in Old Street, St Luke's, where, Fuller tells us, he would " lie hid for some months together, the more retiredly to enjoy the company of the Muses, and then would appear in public to converse with his friends.

Forever Amber tells the story of orphaned Amber St. Clare, who makes her way up through the ranks of 17th century English society by sleeping with and / or marrying successively richer and more important men, while keeping her love for the one man she could never have.

One version of the tale tells St. George as losing the battle with the dragon early on in the encounter.

Benvenuto da Imola in his commentaries written less than a century after the facts tells us that Dolcino was born in Romagnano Sesia, went in his childhood to Vercelli and there lived in the church of St. Agnes where he studied grammar.

Legend tells that the well contained 3 fish, and an angel told St Neot that as long as he ate no more than one fish a day, their number would never decrease.

He quotes Ephesians 5: 19, in which St. Paul tells the church in Ephesus to be ‘ speaking to one another with psalms, hymns and songs from the Spirit ’, and questions whether the worship band, now so often amplified and playing like a rock band, replace rather than enable the congregations ’ praise.

St Paul spoke of the ' last times ': " Brethren, the time is short: it remaineth, that both they that have wives be as though they had none " ( 1 Corinthians 7: 29 ); " God ... Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son " ( Hebrews 1: 2 ).

: And he used to repeat that sentence from St. Paul “ It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God ,” and many other verses of Scripture, urging us thereby to awake from the slumber of the soul by thinking in good time of our last hour.

The whole, however, may be judged from this fragment: " We Irish, though dwelling at the far ends of the earth, are all disciples of St. Peter and St. Paul ... we are bound to the Chair of Peter, and although Rome is great and renowned, through that Chair alone is she looked on as great and illustrious among us ... On account of the two Apostles of Christ, you pope are almost celestial, and Rome is the head of the whole world, and of the Churches ".

The mere fact that Whitey would come all the way out there to talk to us was more than enough to convince me that St. Louis was the place I wanted to be.

In a symbolically important step, Sergius I declared support for the chant " Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world, have mercy on us " at the breaking of the Host during Mass, and restored the damaged facade mosaic in St. Peter's atrium that depicted the Worship of the Lamb ; the depiction of Christ as lamb had been prohibited by the Council.

St Cuthbert's day is celebrated with Mass, and the school prayers still include reference to their patron Saint ( always ending with the invocation " St Cuthbert, pray for us ").

So serious was St. Maximilian about this goal that he added to the Miraculous Medal prayer: Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.

" This view is witnessed to by the prayers of the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, when the priest says: " Accept, O God, our supplications, make us to be worthy to offer unto thee supplications and prayers and bloodless sacrifices for all thy people ," and " Remembering this saving commandment and all those things which came to pass for us: the cross, the grave, the resurrection on the third day, the ascension into heaven, the sitting down at the right hand, the second and glorious coming again, Thine own of Thine own we offer unto Thee on behalf of all and for all ," and "… Thou didst become man and didst take the name of our High Priest, and deliver unto us the priestly rite of this liturgical and bloodless sacrifice …"

It has been matter of question whether Vincentius is to be credited with the authorship of the " Objectiones Vincentianae ," a collection of Sixteen Inferences alleged to be deducible from St. Augustine's writings, which has come down to us in Prosper's Reply.
