However, in 1513 and 1514 Dürer created his three most famous engravings: Knight, Death, and the Devil ( 1513, probably based on Erasmus's treatise Enichiridion militis Christiani ), St. Jerome in his Study, and the much-debated Melencolia I ( both 1514 ).

The Communion of St. Jerome ( 1592 ).

In 1592 he also painted the Communion of St. Jerome, now in the Pinacoteca di Bologna and considered his masterwork.

It has with a Baroque portal ( 1667 ), a noteworthy bell tower, presbytery frescoes portraying the Histories of St. Peter and Virgin by Jacopo da Montagnana ( 1495 ) and Palma the Younger's altarpiece depicting Christ Crucifixed Between St. Augustine and St. Jerome.

St. Jerome differed with St. Augustine in his Latin translation of the plant known in Hebrew as קיקיון ( qiyqayown ), using Hedera ( from the Greek, meaning ivy ) over the more common Latin cucurbita from which the related English plant name cucumber is derived.

St. Jerome suggests this may be because Ezra is seen as an intermediary between the prophets and the ' great synagogue '.

It uses the older Gallican psalter of St. Jerome.

St. Jerome, in his letter Against Jovinianus, discusses how people come to their present condition as a result of their heritage, and then lists several examples of peoples and their customs.

Catullus came from a leading equestrian family of Verona in Cisalpine Gaul, and according to St. Jerome, he was born in the town.

According to the later St. Jerome, celibacy is a moral virtue, consisting of not living in the flesh but outside the flesh ( vivere in carne praeter carnem ).

A less common belief, contradicting allochtonic Slovene origin, was that the Glagolitic was created or used in the 4th century by St. Jerome, hence the alphabet is sometimes named Hieronymian.

In the Middle Ages, Glagolitsa was also known as " St. Jerome's script " due to popular mediaeval legend ( created by Croatian scribes in 13th century ) ascribing its invention to St Jerome ( 342-429 ).

However, it should be noted that the Latin Vulgate translation was a work that St. Jerome began in 382 AD, centuries after the death of Barnabas.

The Galatians were still speaking the Galatian language ( Gaulish ) in the time of St. Jerome ( 347 – 420 AD ), who wrote that the Galatians of Ancyra and the Treveri of Trier ( in what is now the German Rhineland ) spoke the same language ( Comentarii in Epistolam ad Galatos, 2. 3, composed c. 387 ).

In the latter he is known as St. Jerome of Stridonium or Blessed Jerome.

In his Life of St Willibrord, Alcuin writes that Wilgils, called a paterfamilias, had founded an oratory and church at the mouth of the Humber, which had fallen into Alcuin's possession by inheritance.

St Augustine in his City of God writes " God is called omnipotent on account of His doing what He wills " and thus proposes the definition that " Y is omnipotent " means " If Y wishes to do X then Y can and does do X ".

St Paul repeatedly speaks of the " holy kiss ," and, in his Epistle to the Romans, writes: " Salute one another with an holy kiss " and his first Epistle to the Thessalonians ( 1 Thessalonians 5: 26 ), he says: " Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss.

Basil a martyr ; St. Chrysostom applies the same title to Eustachius of Antioch ; St. Paulinus of Nola writes of St. Felix of Nola that he won heavenly honours, sine sanguine martyr (" A bloodless martyr "); St. Gregory the Great styles Zeno of Verona as a martyr, and Metronius gives to St Roterius the same title.

This is expressed in St. Paul's letter to the Philippians, where he writes:

A twentieth century Bishop of Ohrid, Nikolai Velimirovic, writes, " Theophylact's commentaries on the Four Gospels and on other books of the New Testament ... are the finest works of their sort after St John Chrysostom, and are read to this day with great benefit.

John Young writes the Economist, favoring a bridge across the St. Lawrence.

St. Jerome, in his letter to Paula and Eustochius, dated about 392 – 393, writes: " With Christ at our side we shall pass through Shiloh and Bethel " ( Ep. 46, 13, PL 22, 492 ).

In the work St. Augustine writes about how much he regrets having led a sinful and immoral life.

He writes about Nebridius's role in helping to persuade him that astrology was not only incorrect but evil, and St. Ambrose's role in his conversion to Christianity.

This distinction, written about as early as Augustine of Hippo and St Jerome, was detailed more explicitly by Thomas Aquinas in his Summa Theologiae, A. D. 1270, II II, 84, 1: " Reverence is due to God on account of His Excellence, which is communicated to certain creatures not in equal measure, but according to a measure of proportion ; and so the reverence which we pay to God, and which belongs to latria, differs from the reverence which we pay to certain excellent creatures ; this belongs to dulia, and we shall speak of it further on ( II II 103 3 )"; in this next article St. Thomas Aquinas writes: " Wherefore dulia, which pays due service to a human lord, is a distinct virtue from latria, which pays due service to the Lordship of God.

Ernst Käsemann controversially defined the Christology of St John ’ s Gospel as “ naïve docetism ” in 1968.

His description of the Doge ’ s close relationship with the saint, through the “ solemn pomp ” with which he attends mass at the saint ’ s chapel, attaches him to the aforementioned “ exceeding honour ”, in a similar fashion to the way in which Sanudo glorifies Venice as a whole by constantly referring to the beauty and worth of St. Mark ’ s square and chapel as part of his panoramic praise of the city.
