Tektites ( from Greek tektos, molten ) are not themselves meteorites, but are rather natural glass objects up to a few centimeters in size which were formed — according to most scientists — by the impacts of large meteorites on Earth's surface.

Tektites ( from Greek τεκτός tektos, molten ) are gravel-size bodies that are composed of black, green, brown or gray, natural glass that are formed from terrestrial debris ejected during extraterrestrial impacts.

Although Tektites are superficially similar to some terrestrial volcanic glasses ( obsidians ), they have unusual distinctive physical characteristics that distinguish them from such glasses.

Tektites were once thought by many to be obsidian produced by lunar volcanic eruptions, though few scientists now adhere to this hypothesis.
