It is generally assumed that Tertullus was himself a Hellenistic Jew, though he could have been a Gentile.

Tertullus before Antonius Felix makes the first recorded use of the plural " Nazarenes " ( the plural form of the Iesous ho Nazoraios " Jesus of Nazareth ") to refer to Christians, though the use of the term " Christians " is already used at Antioch, and, somewhat ironically, by Herod Agrippa II in the next trial of Paul before Porcius Festus.

Tertullus ' use of the Greek term Nazoraioi has continuity with the Hebrew term Notzrim found in later rabbinical literature.

The title Nazarenes, " men from Nazareth ," is first applied to the Christians by Tertullus (), though Herod Agrippa II () uses the term " Christians " which had first been used at Antioch ().

The name used by Tertullus survives into Rabbinical and modern Hebrew as notzrim ( נוצרים ) a standard Hebrew term for " Christian ", and also into the Quran and modern Arabic as nasara ( plural of nasrani " Christians ").

However, since " Christian " was the name the Christians accepted themselves, and is in 1 Peter, the term " Nazarene " used by Tertullus appears to have never been adopted by Christians.

Epiphanius ( see below ) in discussing the 4th Century Nazarene sect claims pre-Christian origins for the sect, but there seems to be no evidence of the term prior to Tertullus, and no evidence for Epiphanius ' opinion.

Although according to the Gospel of Matthew, the term Nazarene was applied to Jesus due to his living in a town named Nazareth ( Gospel of Matthew 2. 23 ) and Paul was called a Nazarene by Tertullus in the Book of Acts, the sect of Nazarenes is not heard of again till the 4th Century.

The Rabbinic and modern Hebrew name for Christians, notzrim, is also thought to derive from Nazareth, and be connected with Tertullus ' charge against Paul of being a member of the sect of the Nazarenes, Nazoraioi, " men of Nazareth " in Acts.
