The first human born in the Antarctic was Solveig Gunbjørg Jacobsen born on 8 October 1913 in Grytviken, South Georgia.

The Antarctic region had no indigenous population when first discovered, and its present inhabitants comprise a few thousand transient scientific and other personnel working on tours of duty at the several dozen research stations maintained by various countries.

* 1958 – The 3rd Soviet Antarctic Expedition becomes the first expedition to reach The Pole of Relative Inaccessibility in the Antarctic.

* 1773 – Captain James Cook and his crew become the first Europeans to sail below the Antarctic Circle.

* 1978 – Emilio Palma, first person born on the Antarctic continent

Early in June 1899, while home on leave, he had a chance encounter in a London street with Clements Markham ( now knighted and RGS President ), and learned for the first time of an impending Antarctic expedition under the auspices of the Royal Geographical Society.

" Daily Telegraph columnist Jasper Rees, likening the changes in explorers ' reputations to climatic variations, suggests that " in the current Antarctic weather report, Scott is enjoying his first spell in the sun for twenty-five years ". The New York Times Book Review was more critical, pointing out Crane's support for Scott's discredited claims regarding the circumstances of the freeing of the Discovery from the pack ice, and concluded " For all the many attractions of his book, David Crane offers no answers that convincingly exonerate Scott from a significant share of responsibility for his own demise.

He led the Antarctic expedition ( 1910-12 ) to discover the South Pole in December 1911 and he was the first expedition leader to ( undisputedly ) reach the North Pole in 1926.

He was a member of the Belgian Antarctic Expedition ( 1897 – 99 ) as first mate.

* December 1 – Cold War – Antarctic Treaty: 12 countries, including the United States and the Soviet Union, sign a landmark treaty, which sets aside Antarctica as a scientific preserve and bans military activity on that continent ( the first arms control agreement established during the Cold War ).

* February 11 – Burgess Ice Rise lying off the west coast of Alexander Island, Antarctica is first mapped by the British Antarctic Survey ( BAS ).

* January 21 – Peter I Island in the Antarctic first sighted by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen.

* January 17 – Captain James Cook becomes the first European explorer to cross the Antarctic Circle.

* April – – English merchant Anthony de la Roché, blown off course having rounded Cape Horn eastabout, makes the first discovery of land south of the Antarctic Convergence, landing on South Georgia and ( probably ) Gough Island.

The Antarctic island of South Georgia used to have several thriving whaling settlements during the first half of the 20th century, with a combined population exceeding 2, 000 in some years.

The first was composed in 1974 – 76, the eighth ( subtitled " Antarctic ") in 2000.

In 1773 James Cook crossed the Antarctic Circle for the first time but although he discovered nearby islands, he did not catch sight of Antarctica itself.

The doubling of the Cape of Good Hope in 1487 by Bartolomeu Dias first brought explorers within touch of the Antarctic cold, and proved that there was an ocean separating Africa from any Antarctic land that might exist.

The visit to South Georgia by Anthony de la Roché in 1675 was the first ever discovery of land south of the Antarctic Convergence i. e. in the Antarctic.
