Clemens Brentano, or Klemens Brentano ( September 9, 1778 – July 28, 1842 ) was a German poet and novelist.

In 1804 Savigny married Kunigunde Brentano, the sister of Bettina von Arnim and Clemens Brentano the poet, and the same year started on an extensive tour through France and south Germany in search of fresh sources of Roman law.

A principal source is The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ the reported ( yet disputed ) visions of the stigmatic German nun Anne Catherine Emmerich ( 1774 – 1824 ), as written by the poet Clemens Brentano.

However, considering that Pope Clemens VII died in 1534, before any of Clemens's music was published, and that the confusion with the poet is unlikely in that the surnames were quite distinct, it is likely that the nickname was merely created in jest rather than for practical reasons.

At the time of her second examination in 1819, the famous poet Clemens Brentano was induced to visit her.

The authenticity of Brentano's writings has been questioned and critics have characterized the books as " conscious elaborations by a poet " and a " well-intentioned fraud " by Brentano.
