What real wrong is there, after all, in destroying a synagogue, a ' home of perfidy, a home of impiety ,' in which Christ is daily blasphemed?

* 1730 – Shearith Israel, the first synagogue in New York City, is dedicated.

The shofar or keren ( horn ) is the only temple instrument still being used today in the synagogue, and it is only used from Rosh Chodesh Elul through the end of Yom Kippur.

The shofar is used by itself, without any vocal accompaniment, and is limited to a very strictly defined set of sounds and specific places in the synagogue service.

St. Jerome suggests this may be because Ezra is seen as an intermediary between the prophets and the ' great synagogue '.

The early history of the synagogue is obscure, but it seems to be an institution developed for public Jewish worship during the Babylonian captivity when the Jews ( and Jewish Proselytes ) did not have access to a Temple ( the First Temple having been destroyed c. 586 BC ) for ritual sacrifice.

One might note, however, that what is assumed to be a niche for the Torah scroll in the building probably originally built as a Judeo-Christian synagogue between AD 70 and AD 135 on the traditional site of the Cenacle or upper room of the Last Supper and now identified as the site of the King David's Tomb is oriented not towards the Temple Mount, but towards the site of the Holy Sepulchre, which would seem to indicate that the Christian community that had built it had already began to transfer many of the religious traditions originally associated with the Temple to the sites they associated with Christ's death and resurrection ( such as the burial place of Adam and the centre of the world ).

The eleventh century Erfurt Synagogue is thought to be the oldest synagogue building still standing in Europe.

The Hobart Synagogue is the oldest synagogue in Australia and a rare surviving example of an Egyptian Revival synagogue.

The CJLS has used this power on a number of occasions, most famously in the " driving teshuva ", which says that if someone is unable to walk to any synagogue on the Sabbath, and their commitment to observance is so loose that not attending synagogue may lead them to drop it altogether, their rabbi may give them a dispensation to drive there and back ; and more recently in its decision prohibiting the taking of evidence on Mamzer status on the grounds that implementing such a status is immoral.

* Gabbai ( sexton )-Calls people up to the Torah, appoints the shatz for each prayer session if there is no standard shatz, and makes certain that the synagogue is kept clean and supplied.

During this holiday the Torah portion containing the Ten Commandments is read in the synagogue, and the biblical Book of Ruth is read as well.

Pfungstadt is also notable as being the birthplace of the great Anglo-Jewish synagogue composer Julius Mombach.

A genizah ( or geniza ; Hebrew: " storage "; plural: genizot or genizoth or genizahs ) is the store-room or depository in a Jewish synagogue ( or cemetery ), usually specifically for worn-out Hebrew-language books and papers on religious topics that were stored there before they could receive a proper cemetery burial, it being forbidden to throw away writings containing the name of God ( even personal letters and legal contracts could open with an invocation of God ).
