The Myvyrian Archaiology of Wales, an early 19th-century collection of Welsh histories, repeats Geoffrey's account, referring to him as ' Gwrthevyr ' ( though Vortiporius ' proper Modern Welsh spelling is Gwrdebyr ; here the name has been confused with that of Vortimer, the son of Vortigern ).

Chapters 43 – 45 say that after the British king Vortigern had been appeasing the Saxons, his son Vortimer rose against the enemy and engaged them in four battles.

In the 5th century, British warlord Vortigern and his two sons, Vortimer and Catigern, took part in the Battle of Elstree, then called the Battle of Ailestreu, where the Saxon Horsa was killed.

After a dire period of Saxon encroachment, exacerbated by even more disgraceful behavior on Vortigern's part, Vortimer finally rises up against the Saxons.

The ambassadors inform Vortigern that Hengist does not intend to stay with Vortigern nor does Hengist intend to attack his countrymen, but rather he has brought his men because he thought Vortimer was yet living, so that he could defend himself.

* Genealogical material about Vortigern's ancestry, the names of his four sons ( Vortimer, Pascent, Catigern, Faustus ), a father ( Vitalis ), a grandfather ( Vitalinus ) and a great-grandfather who is probably just an eponym ( Gloui ) which associates Vortigern with Glevum, the civitas of Gloucester.

The site is traditionally known as the burial site of Catigern, brother of Vortimer and son of Vortigern following a battle with the Saxon Horsa in the mid fifth century AD-listed in The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as taking place in 455 AD.

It happened however after the death of Vortimer, son of King Vortigern, and after the return of Hengist with his forces, they called for a false Council, so that they might work sorrow to Vortigern with his army.

But at length his son Vortimer engaged Hengist and Horsa and their men in battle, drove them back to Thanet and there enclosed them and beset them on the western flank.

Hengist, hearing that Vortimer is dead, raises an army of three thousand or men, sets up a fleet, and sails it to Britain.

Yet now that he, Hengist, no longer doubts the death of Vortimer, Hengist submits himself and his people to the will of Vortigern, so that he will accept whomever Vortigern likes among his men, and send the rest back to Germania.

Vortimer attacked the Saxons four times: first enclosing the Saxons in Thanet, secondly fighting at the river Derwent, the third time at Epsford, where both Horsa and Vortigern's son Catigern died, and lastly " near the stone on the shore of the Gallic sea ," where the Saxons were defeated and fled to their ships.

After a " short interval " Vortimer died and the Saxons became established, " assisted by foreign pagans.

When the Saxons can no longer tolerate the assaults of the Britons, they send out Vortigern to his son Vortimer, asking for safe return back to Germania.

After a period of peace, Vortimer ( son of king Vortigern ), defeat the Saxons in four battles in Kent ( according to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle ).

In the Historia Brittonum it is claimed that Vortigern's son Vortimer, led the Britons against Hengest's Saxons.

Moreover, it is claimed that the Saxons were driven out of Britain, only to return at Vortigern's re-invitation a few years later, following the death of Vortimer.

After he has driven out the Saxons, Vortimer is poisoned by his stepmother Rowena ( a Saxon ) and Vortigern regains the crown.

Vortimer died at the Battle of Aylesford alongside Horsa, the Jutish co-ruler of Kent.

Like the Historia Brittonum, Geoffrey adds that Vortigern was succeeded briefly by his son Vortimer, only to take the throne again when Vortimer is killed.

Geoffrey also includes Aurelius Ambrosius, another figure mentioned in the Historia, as a king in his own right, and also includes other characters such as Vortimer and Bishop Germanus of Auxerre.
