Some of their works are considered precursors of archaeoastronomy ; antiquarians interpreted the astronomical orientation of the ruins that dotted the English countryside as William Stukeley did of Stonehenge in 1740, while John Aubrey in 1678 and Henry Chauncy in 1700 sought similar astronomical principles underlying the orientation of churches.

In 1578, to further the plans of exiled English and Irish Catholics such as Nicholas Sanders, William Allen, and James Fitzmaurice FitzGerald, Gregory outfitted adventurer Thomas Stukeley with a ship and an army of 800 men to land in Ireland to aid in the hope for overthrow of Elizabeth's rule through the Catholic leader and former leader of the first Desmond rebellion, Fitzmaurice.

William Stukeley in 1740 notes, " Pendulous rocks are now called henges in Yorkshire ... I doubt not, Stonehenge in Saxon signifies the hanging stones.

William Stukeley continued Aubrey ’ s work in the early 18th century, but took an interest in the surrounding monuments as well, identifying ( somewhat incorrectly ) the Cursus and the Avenue.

The tapestry was first briefly noted in English in 1743 by William Stukeley, in his Palaeographia Britannica.

William Stukeley propounded that Farnham is the site of the lost Roman settlement of " Vindomis ", although this is now believed to be at Neatham, near Alton.

In the 18th century William Stukeley visited the site and chronicled the further damage that had been done.

Later, William Stukeley wrote that a skeleton and bridle had been discovered during tree planting on the summit in 1723.

William Stukeley FRS, FRCP, FSA ( 7 November 1687 – 3 March 1765 ) was an English antiquarian who pioneered the archaeological investigation of the prehistoric monuments of Stonehenge and Avebury, work for which he has been remembered as " probably ... the most important of the early forerunners of the discipline of archaeology ".

William Stukeley was the son of a lawyer at Holbeach in Lincolnshire on the site of Stukeley Hall, a primary school that now bears his name.

When Quiney and William Parsons wrote to Greville in 1593 asking his consent in the election for bailiff, they sent the letter to Mr. William Sawnders, attendant on the worshipful Mr. Thomas Bushell at Marston.
