* July 12 – The Phelps Dodge Corporation deports over 1, 000 suspected IWW members from Bisbee, Arizona.

* November 11 – The Centralia Massacre in Centralia, Washington results in the deaths of four members of the American Legion, and the lynching of a local leader of the Industrial Workers of the World ( IWW ).

Many IWW members opposed United States participation in World War I.

A statement was issued that denounced the war, but IWW members were advised to channel their opposition through the legal mechanisms of conscription.

In 1917, during an incident known as the Tulsa Outrage, a group of black-robed Knights of Liberty, a short-lived faction of the Ku Klux Klan, tarred and feathered seventeen members of the IWW in Oklahoma.

The IWW members had been turned over to the Knights of Liberty by local authorities after they were convicted of the crime of not owning war bonds.

Members of the IWW were prosecuted under various State and federal laws and the 1920 Palmer Raids singled out the foreign-born members of the organization.

In 1949, Tom C. Clark placed the IWW on the Attorney General's List of Subversive Organizations in the category of " organizations seeking to change the government by unconstitutional means " under Executive Order 9835 ( revoked in 1953 ), which offers no means of appeal, and which excludes all IWW members from Federal employment and even federally subsidized housing.

The 1960s Civil Rights Movement, anti-war protests, and various university student movements brought new life to the IWW, albeit with many fewer new members than the great organizing drives of the early part of the 20th Century.

IWW members have been active in the building trades, marine transport, ship yards, high tech industries, hotels and restaurants, public interest organizations, schools and universities, recycling centers, railroads, bike messengers, and lumber yards.

As of 2005, the 100th anniversary of its founding, the IWW had around 5, 000 members, compared to 13 million members in the AFL-CIO.

In very significant part this was due to the agitation of the IWW, a group which probably never had as many as 500 members in Australia at its peak.

The IWW founded the Anti-Conscription League ( ACL ) in which IWW members worked with the broader labour and peace movement, and also carried on an aggressive propaganda campaign in its own name ; leading to the imprisonment of Tom Barker ( 1887 – 1970 ) the editor of the IWW paper Direct Action, sentenced to twelve months in March 1916.

Eighty six IWW members immediately defied the law and were sentenced to six months imprisonment, this was certainly a high percentage of the Australian IWW's active membership but it is not known how high.

During the war over 100 IWW members Australia-wide were sentenced to imprisonment on political charges, including the veteran activist and icon of the labour, socialist and anarchist movements Monty Miller.

In 1939 the Australian IWW had four members, according to surveillance by government authorities, and these members were consistently opposed to the Second World War.

Allen's group soon disappeared, but the first IWW group in Britain was founded by members of the Industrial Syndicalist Education League around Guy Bowman in 1913.

More recently, IWW members were involved in the Liverpool dockers ' strike that took place between 1995 and 1998, and numerous other events and struggles throughout the 1990s and 2000s ( decade ), including the successful unionising of several workplaces, such as support workers for the Scottish Socialist Party.

Travis played an active role in the Flint Sit-Down Strike, aided by some veteran CP autoworkers inside Fisher Body Plant # 1 – but also by other radical workers, some belonging to Trotskyist parties, the Socialist Party or the IWW.

The IWW ( or the Wobblies ) was an important industrial union, and was the first American labor union to recruit and organize women and people of color, and played a critical role in the fight for the eight-hour work day and in Free Speech fights all over the country in the early 20th century.

Since the founding of the Industrial Workers of the World, also known as the IWW, songs have played a big part in spreading the message of the One Big Union.

Elizabeth Gurley Flynn ( August 7, 1890 – September 5, 1964 ) was a labor leader, activist, and feminist who played a leading role in the Industrial Workers of the World ( IWW ).

Immediately following the general strike's end, 39 IWW members were arrested as " ringleaders of anarchy ", despite their playing a marginal role in the development of events.

In 1934 Mattick, some friends from the IWW as well as some expellees from the Leninist Proletarian Party formed the United Workers Party, later to be renamed Group of Council Communists.

The IWW also had a presence among waterfront workers in Boston, New York City, New Orleans, Houston, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Eureka, Portland, Tacoma, Seattle, Vancouver as well as in ports in the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Germany and other nations.

The IWW has stepped in several times to help the rank and file in mainstream unions, including saw mill workers in Fort Bragg in California in 1989, concession stand workers in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1990s, and most recently at shipyards along the Mississippi River.

By this time using the name Joe or Joseph Hillstrom ( possibly because of anti-union blacklisting ), he joined the Industrial Workers of the World ( IWW ) or Wobblies around 1910, when working on the docks in San Pedro, California.

In the 1920s, vigilantes opposed to IWW organizers at California's harbor of San Pedro, kidnapped at least one organizer, subjected him to tarring and feathering, and left him in a remote location.

Mooney subsequently settled in San Francisco where he briefly became a member of the Industrial Workers of the World ( IWW ) before resigning from that organization.

The IWW was also involved in the 1923 seamen's strike at San Pedro, where Upton Sinclair was arrested for reciting the Declaration of Independence.

" Jack " McDonald-Former IWW, Industrial Worker Editor, Socialist Party of Canada member and owner of McDonald's Books ( founded 1926 ; 48 Turk St., San Francisco ); McDonald ( sometimes spelled " MacDonald ") published a periodical entitled On the Record.

Ralph Chaplin, editor of the Industrial Workers of the World ( IWW ) newspaper Solidarity and later, of the Industrial Worker, identified four levels of general strike,

The IWW began to fully embrace the general strike in 1910-1911.

In a 1911 speech in New York City, IWW organizer Haywood explained his view of the economic situation, and why he believed a general strike was justified,

In 1927 the IWW called for a three day nationwide walkout — in essence, a demonstration general strike — to protest the execution of anarchists Ferdinando Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti.

The IWW sought to unite the entire working class into One Big Union which would struggle for improved working conditions and wages in the short term, while working to ultimately overthrow capitalism through a general strike, after which the members of the union would manage production ( also see anarcho-syndicalism which has some similarities ...)

The IWW organised in the United States, Canada, Australia, and other countries, employed creative tactics, and advocated the general strike as a favorite method for workers to gain control of industries.

The IWW concluded that the Russian revolution and local communist activities had a divisive effect on the general anti-capitalist movement, but this effect was not immediately apparent.

The Canadian OBU movement had been inspired by the IWW, and like the IWW, it favored the general strike.

For a period, he joined the Industrial Workers of the World ( known as the IWW or Wobblies ), who were the only revolutionary union organization existing in America that, in spite of national or sectoral differences, assembled all workers in One Big Union, so as to prepare the general strike to bring down capitalism.

Disillusioned with the IWW hostility to parliamentary politics, Grant was the Industrial Socialist Labor Party candidate for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly seat of Sturt in the general election of March 1922.
