Cretin became a medical term in the 18th century, from an Alpine French dialect prevalent in a region where persons with such a condition were especially common ( see below ); it saw wide medical use in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and then spread more widely in popular English as a markedly derogatory term for a person who behaves stupidly.

* 1348 – A strong earthquake strikes the South Alpine region of Friuli in modern Italy, causing considerable damage to buildings as far away as Rome.

The proximity of the mountains – as well as its status as the most populated city of the Alpine region before Innsbruck and Bolzano – has led to the city being known in France as the " Capital of the Alps.

But unlike many other Alpine regions, which have been left to be explored by strangers, this region has been long visited by Swiss travellers and men of sciences.

Mount Buffalo is a moderately tall mountain plateau ( elev 1723 metres AHD at its highest point ) on the west side of the Victoria Alpine region.

The climate of the Alps is the climate, or average weather conditions over a long time, of the exact middle Alpine region of Europe.

Between 35 and 6 BC, the Alpine region was gradually integrated into the expanding Roman Empire.

With the division of the Roman Empire and the collapse of its Western part in the fourth and fifth centuries, power relations in the Alpine region reverted to their local dimensions.

The successive emigration and occupation of the Alpine region by the Alemanni from the 6th to the 8th centuries are, too, known only in outline.

The French historian Fernand Braudel, in his famous volume on Mediterranean civilisation, describes the Alps as “ an exceptional range of mountains from the point of view of resources, collective disciplines, the quality of its human population and the number of good roads .” This remarkable human presence in the Alpine region came into being with the population growth and agrarian expansion of the High Middle Ages.

Inside the Alpine region there was a striking difference between the western and central parts, which were dominated by small farming establishments, and the eastern part, which were characterised by medium or big farms.

For the modern era it is possible to offer a quantitative estimate of the population of the Alpine region.

Like other parts of Europe, the Alpine region was affected by the formation of the nation states that produced tensions between various groups and had consequences for border areas.

During World War I the eastern Alpine region was one of the epicentres of the conflict.

Extinct languages known to have been spoken in the Alpine region include Rhaetic, Lepontic, Ligurian and Langobardic.

As a result of the complicated history of the Alpine region, the native language and the national feelings of the inhabitants do not always correspond to the current international borders.

The higher region of the Alps were long left to the exclusive attention of the inhabitants of the adjoining valleys, even when Alpine travellers ( as distinguished from Alpine climbers ) began to visit these valleys.

Alpine Slavs, ancestors of modern-day Slovenes settled the area in the late 6th Century A. D.

The Slavic ancestors of present-day Slovenes settled in the East Alpine area at the end of the 6th century.

The most important mountainous area is an Alpine zone including the Lepontine and Rhaetian Alps, ( Piz Bernina – La Spedla, 4, 020 m ), the Bergamo Alps, the Ortler Alps and the Adamello massif ; it is followed by an Alpine foothills zone Prealpi, which include the main peaks are the Grigna Group ( 2, 410 m ), Resegone ( 1, 875 m ) and Presolana ( 2, 521 m ).

In the area of the great Alpine foothills lakes, however, grow olive trees, cypresses and larches, as well as varieties of subtropical flora such as magnolias, azaleas, acacias, etc.

It is the lowest of the Alpine passes, and one of the few in the area.

The area lends itself to a wide variety of outdoor sports, both winter ( ice hockey, Nordic and Alpine skiing, figure skating, and snowmobiling ) and summer ( trail running, hiking, camping, river and sea kayaking, sailing, windsurfing and road and mountain biking ).

In 2004, the Victorian State Government made the decision that cattle grazing would no longer be permitted in this remaining area of the Alpine National Park.

In the words of Honorary President of the American Alpine Club, Robert H. Bates, this yeti discovery “ has apparently solved the mystery of the yeti, or at least part of it, and in so doing added to the world ’ s great wildlife preserves ” such that the shy animal that lives in trees ( and not the high snows ), and mysteries and myths of the Himalaya that it represents, can continue within a protected area nearly the size of Switzerland.

The few existing historical sources distinguish between two separate Slavic principalities in the Eastern Alpine area: Carantania and Carniola.

In 1991 the Alpine Convention was established to regulate this transnational area, whose area measures about 190, 000 square kilometres.

Within the area delimited by the Alpine Convention, there were about 3. 1 million inhabitants in 1500, 5. 8 in 1800, 8. 5 in 1900 and 13. 9 in 2000.

General Nathan Bedford Forrest fought an engagement near Alpine with Federal cavalry resulting in the Federals being thrown back to the Chattanooga area.

Oil was discovered in the Alpine area in 1996.

The Alpine Boat Basin serves as both a public picnic area and small marina for private boats.

Of the fifty some great lodging places within the village and surrounding area, only a few remain: The Regis, Mathes Hotel ( Kosher Plaza ), Alpine, Lorraine, Fleischmanns Hotel ( Roberts ' Auction ), Meinstein Lodge ( Highland Fling Inn ), and the Palace Hotel.

Prior to 1959, Alpine was the largest city in the largest county ( by area ) in the largest state of the Union.

It contains the cities of Provo, Orem, and their suburbs, including Alpine, American Fork, Elk Ridge, Genola, Goshen, Highland, Lehi, Lindon, Mapleton, Payson, Pleasant Grove, Salem, Santaquin, Saratoga Springs, Spanish Fork, Springville, and Woodland Hills.
