Fraser uses them to make an ironic allusion to Henry Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey, and one of the heroes of Waterloo, who cuckolded the Duke of Wellington's brother Henry Wellesley and later-in one of the period's more celebrated scandals-married Wellesley's ex-wife.

He is known to have done so with William Paget, private secretary to Henry VIII, and to have secured the support of Sir Anthony Browne of the Privy Chamber.

William Paget, 1st Baron Paget of Beaudesert ( 1506 – 9 June 1563 ), was an English statesman and accountant who held prominent positions in the service of Henry VIII, Edward VI and Mary I.

Henry VIII gave Bromley Abbatis to Sir William Paget, Clerk of the Signet and Privy Councillor.

Field Marshal Henry William Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey, KG, GCB, GCH, PC ( 17 May 1768 – 29 April 1854 ), styled Lord Paget between 1784 and 1812 and known as The Earl of Uxbridge between 1812 and 1815, was a British military leader and politician, now chiefly remembered for leading the charge of the heavy cavalry against d ' Erlon's column during the Battle of Waterloo.

Born in London, as Henry Bayly ( his father assumed the name Paget in 1770 ), he was the eldest son of Henry Paget, 1st Earl of Uxbridge, by his wife Jane, daughter of the Very Reverend Arthur Champagné, Dean of Clonmacnoise, Ireland.

In the late 18th century the original Norman Castle had been enlarged and refashioned in an early Gothic Revival style for Bute's grandfather, the 1st Marquess, by Henry Holland.

In 1714 the earldom of Clare was revived when he was created Viscount Haughton, in the County of Nottingham, and Earl of Clare, with remainder to his younger brother Henry Pelham, and the following year the dukedom was also revived when he was made Marquess of Clare and Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, with similar remainder to his younger brother Henry.
