The family was Byzantine Catholic and attended St. John Chrysostom Byzantine Catholic Church.

This incident shows the strong position of a bishop in the Western part of the empire, even when facing a strong emperor — the controversy of John Chrysostom with a much weaker emperor a few years later in Constantinople led to a crushing defeat of the bishop.

He also translated from Greek into Latin a life of St. John Chrysostom ( Venice, 1533 ); the Spiritual Wisdom of John Moschus ; The Ladder of Divine Ascent of St. John Climacus ( Venice, 1531 ), P. G., LXXXVIII.

He also translated many homilies of St. John Chrysostom ; the treatise of the Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite on the celestial hierarchy ; St.

Eudoxia's influence was strongly opposed by John Chrysostom, the Patriarch of Constantinople, who felt that she had used her family's wealth to gain control over the Emperor.

There was an opinion in the Church that viewed that perhaps the Council understood the Church of Alexandria correctly, but wanted to curtail the existing power of the Alexandrine Hierarch, especially after the events that happened several years before at Constantinople from Pope Theophilus of Alexandria towards Patriarch John Chrysostom and the unfortunate turnouts of the Second Council of Ephesus in AD 449, where Eutichus misled Pope Dioscorus and the Council in confessing the Orthodox Faith in writing and then renouncing it after the Council, which in turn, had upset Rome, especially that the Tome which was sent was not read during the Council sessions.

Quartodecimanism seems to have lingered into the 4th century, when Socrates of Constantinople recorded that some Quartodecimans were deprived of their churches by John Chrysostom and that some were harassed by Nestorius.

In the Rite of Constantinople, two different anaphoras are currently used: one is attributed to Saint John Chrysostom, the other to Saint Basil the Great.

Among the Oriental Orthodox, a variety of anaphoras are used, but all are similar in structure to those of the Constantinopolitan Rite, in which the Anaphora of Saint John Chrysostom is used most days of the year ; Saint Basil's is offered on the Sundays of Great Lent, the eves of Christmas and Theophany, Holy Thursday, Holy Saturday, and upon his feast day ( 1 January ).

The Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, used in the Byzantine Churches, still has a formula of dismissal of catechumens ( not usually followed by any action ) at this point.

The greatest names of the classical and patristic world are among those translated, edited or annotated by Erasmus, including Saint Ambrose, Aristotle, Saint Augustine, Saint Basil, Saint John Chrysostom, Cicero and Saint Jerome.

So it was that Pope Innocent I contrived to have Honorius write to his brother, condemning the deposition of John Chrysostom in 407.

In his Homilies Concerning the Statutes St. John Chrysostom ( 344 – 408 ) explicitly espoused the idea, based on his reading of Scripture, that the Earth floated on the waters gathered below the firmament, and St. Athanasius ( c. 293 – 373 ) expressed similar views in Against the Heathen.

In the Roman Catholic Church he is numbered among the Doctors of the Church ; in Eastern Orthodoxy and the Eastern Catholic Churches he is revered as one of the Three Holy Hierarchs, along with Basil the Great and John Chrysostom.

On November 27, 2004, those relics, along with those of John Chrysostom, were returned to Istanbul ( Constantinople ) by Pope John Paul II, with the Vatican retaining a small portion of both.

According to the entries in Lampe's A Patristic Greek Lexicon, the basic terms hesychia and hesychazo appear as early as the 4th Century in such Fathers as St John Chrysostom and the Cappadocians.

John was born in Antioch in 349 to Greco-Syrian parents.

The earliest Church Father to witness to a Byzantine text-type in substantial New Testament quotations is John Chrysostom ( c. 349 — 407 ); although the fragmentary surviving works of Asterius the Sophist († 341 ) have also been considered to conform to the Byzantine text.
