Less ambitious freeway plans may be more successful -- especially when the roadways and interchanges are raised, allowing for cross access at many points and providing parking areas below the ramp.

The freeway continues southerly toward Big Rapids and Grand Rapids and northerly toward Manton before transitioning to a two-lane highway for the remainder of the distance to Petoskey.

Route 18 continues northwestward into Colts Neck The freeway continues to the northwest through wooded land for several miles, crossing over Normandy Road and to the south of the Pebble Creek Golf Club.

The freeway continues with exits for George Street, Rutgers ( for access to the College Avenue Campus ) and Easton Avenue before exiting New Brunswick on the John A. Lynch, Sr. Memorial Bridge over the Raritan River.

The bridge is part of State Route 84, and is directly connected to Interstate 880 by a freeway segment north of the Fremont end.

* December 30 – California's first modern freeway, the future State Route 110, opens to traffic in Pasadena, California, as the Arroyo Seco Parkway ( now the Pasadena Freeway ).

The freeway revolt prompted the governor of Massachusetts to halt construction on all remaining expressways within the Route 128 beltway in the early 1970s in lieu of light rail / subway lines to serve areas through which the radial expressways were planned.

The most important of these is probably the Panamerican National Route 9 Buenos Aires – Rosario – Córdoba freeway.

Upon reaching Shelton, U. S. 101 turns into a two lane bypass that changes to a freeway at the junction of State Route 3, merging with State Route 8 and finally ending at Interstate 5.

Major state highways include Maryland Route 90, which is a freeway from US 50 to northern Ocean City, and Maryland Route 12, which connects Snow Hill and Salisbury.

To the south, the same C / D roads become Maryland Route 665 as a direct freeway spur into Annapolis.

During the 1950s, as the New Jersey State Highway Department was drawing out plans for an extensive freeway system, freeways were proposed for Route 18 and nearby Route 35.

Route 18's freeway was to begin in Eatontown and head westward to Old Bridge along the former alignment of State Highway Route 18 prior to the 1953 renumbering, while Route 35 was to head northward from Seaside Heights to Long Branch.

It serves as the southern half of the freeway before becoming a mountainous route through rural parts of the county and enters Maryland and reaches Interstate 68.

In 1960, a freeway was proposed along the Route 68 corridor, running from a planned Route 38 freeway near JB MDL Dix south to Route 70 and Route 72.

The entire stretch of Highway 19 between Campbell River and the city of Parksville is a divided four-lane freeway or expressway ( alternates ), with a nominal speed limit of 110 km / h ( 68 mph ), and is referred to as the " Inland Island Highway ".

South of Kamloops, Highway 5 is known as the Coquihalla Highway ( colloquially " the Coke "), and is a 186 km ( 116 mi )- long freeway, varying between four and six lanes and having a posted speed limit of 110 km / h ( 68 mph ).

The section of Highway 97C east of Merritt is mostly freeway, with a speed limit of 110 km / h ( 68 mph ) and between 4 and 6 lanes, and has very few exits along its route.

The freeway then weaves through mountainous terrain, interchanging with Pennsylvania Route 68 in Vanport just before crossing the Vanport Bridge over the Ohio River.

At the terminus of SR 117 near Huntsville, US 33 becomes a limited-access multi-lane highway before reaching US 68 at Bellefontaine where it resumes as a controlled-access freeway, passing Campbell Hill, the highest point in Ohio, and continuing around Marysville.

In 1997, the first section of the " East Belt " was opened in High Point, rerouting US 311 onto the new freeway to Eastchester Drive then back into downtown High Point with concurrency with North Carolina Highway 68.

At this point, SR 68 exits SR 1 onto the Monterey-Salinas Highway, which is a freeway for the first half mile.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Caltrans had planned to upgrade Highway 68 to a freeway between Salinas and Highway 1 in Monterey, that was to start at US 101 south of the city and proceed west between Salinas and Spreckels, serving as a bypass for Salinas.

The freeway was to then follow the existing Highway 68 alignment into Monterey.

At Mile 3. 0, it crosses underneath Route 6 at Exit 6 ( mile 68 of the freeway ).
