August Wilhelm Ambros ( November 17, 1816 – June 28, 1876 ) was an Austrian composer and music historian of Czech descent.

Ambros studied at the University of Prague and was well-educated in music and the arts, which were his abiding passion.

The compound, which followed the discovery of the nerve agent tabun, was named in honor of its discoverers: Schrader, Ambros, Rüdiger and Van der LINde.
