The line up of the group for its first album was Donna Dresch, guitar and bass ; Jody Bleyle, guitar, bass, and vocals ; Kaia Wilson, guitar and vocals ; and Marci Martinez on drums.

All were veterans of other musical outfits ; Donna Dresch had previously played and recorded with such bands as Dinosaur Jr., Dangermouse, Screaming Trees, Rastro !, Fifth Column, Some Velvet Sidewalk, Lois, Mary Lou Lord and The Go Team ; Jody Bleyle was simultaneously in the bands Hazel and Lovebutt while playing in Team Dresch ; Kaia Wilson had been in the band Adickdid and Marci Martinez in Calamity Jane.

The group was a quartet, consisting of Jody Bleyle ( drums and vocals ), Pete Krebs ( guitar and vocals ), Brady Smith ( bass ), and Fred Nemo ( dancer ).

After Captain My Captain, Kaia Wilson and Melissa York left the band to form The Butchies, while Dresch and Bleyle continued recording with the addition of new member Amanda Kelley and with Marci Martinez once again on drums.

Jody Bleyle is interviewed in the documentary film She's Real, Worse Than Queer speaking about Candy Ass Records and the release of Free to Fight, along with Alice Stagg, who contributed several segments on self-defense on the recording and accompanied Team Dresch on the tour promoting the release.

From there, she went on to Team Dresch, in which she shared singing and songwriting duties with Jody Bleyle.

Rather than singing together in harmony, Krebs and Bleyle often sang completely different parts that answered or intertwined with one another.

Bleyle, now based in Los Angeles, continues to perform around the United States, including reunion shows with girl punk band Team Dresch, a duo with her brother Allen called Family Outing, touring with Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls, and singing jazz standards in L. A. dives.

In 2004, when she embarked on her Prom tour, she brought Les Nuby ( guitar ), Will Lochamy ( drums ), and Jody Bleyle ( bass ).

Personal Best appeared in January 1995 as a co-release on the independent labels Chainsaw Records, run by Dresch and Candy Ass Records, run by Bleyle.

Candy Ass Records is an independent record label run out of Portland, Oregon by Jody Bleyle, a member of the bands Team Dresch and Hazel and formerly of the queercore bands Family Outing and Infinite Xs.

Jody Bleyle also released recordings by her other band Hazel.
