To ask me to believe that so inexpressibly marvelous a book was written long after all the events by some admiring follower, and was not inspired directly by the Spirit of God, is asking me to accept a miracle far greater than any of those recorded in the Bible.

The outcome of such an experiment has been in due time the acceptance of the Bible as the Word of God inspired in a sense utterly different from any merely human book, and with it the acceptance of our Lord Jesus Christ as the only begotten Son of God, Son of Man by the Virgin Mary, the Saviour of the world.

The central idea of the book of Amos is that God puts his people on the same level as the surrounding nations-God expects the same purity of them all.

When the Western Roman Empire was starting to disintegrate, Augustine developed the concept of the Catholic Church as a spiritual City of God ( in a book of the same name ), distinct from the material Earthly City.

In the Jewish Deuterocanonical book Second Maccabees, Chapter 2, " one finds in the records " that Jeremiah, having received an oracle of the Lord, ordered that the tent and the ark and the altar of incense should follow him to the mountain of God where he sealed them up in a cave, and he told those who followed him in order to mark the way ( but they could not find it ) " The place shall remain unknown until God gathers his people together again and shows his mercy, and then the Lord will disclose these things, and the glory of the Lord and the cloud shall appear, as they were shown in the case of Moses, and as Solomon asked that the place be specially consecrated.

The book is structured in two roughly equal parts, the story of the campaigns of the Israelites in central, southern and northern Canaan and the destruction of their enemies, followed by the division of the conquered land among the twelve tribes ; the two parts are framed by set-piece speeches by God and Joshua commanding the conquest and at the end warning of the need for faithful obedience of the Law ( torah ) revealed to Moses.

The book opens with the Israelites in the land which God has promised to them but worshiping " foreign gods " instead of Yahweh, the god of Israel, and with the Canaanites still present everywhere.

The main themes of the book are introduced in the opening poem ( the " Song of Hannah "): ( 1 ), the sovereignty of Yahweh, God of Israel ; ( 2 ), the reversal of human fortunes ; and ( 3 ), kingship.

The book of Ruth portrays a perfect example of a true belief in the Creator God in that it propagates inclusion of all, even in the ancient world of the Israelites where separation is made obvious between Israelites and non-Israelites.

This interpretation is supported with the argument that there is nowhere else in the book where Job express a wish for bodily resurrection, only for someone to intervene as an " umpire ", a " vindicator ", a " go ' el ", on his behalf as an impartial judge between himself and God in the present.

The book opens with a vision of Yahweh, God of Israel ; moves on to anticipate the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple, explains this as Yahweh's punishment, and closes with the promise of a new beginning and a new Temple.

Stephen Cook asserts that the prophetic efforts of this book can be summed up in this passage " I have been the Lord your God ever since the land of Egypt ; you know no God but me, and besides me there is no savior " () Hosea's job was to speak these words during a time when that had been essentially forgotten.
