* 1453 – Mehmed II begins his siege of Constantinople ( Istanbul ), which falls on May 29.

* 1461 – The Empire of Trebizond surrenders to the forces of Sultan Mehmed II.

* 1451 – Sultan Mehmed II inherits the throne of the Ottoman Empire.

Under a red flag bearing Skanderbeg's heraldic emblem, an Albanian force held off Ottoman campaigns for twenty-five years and overcame sieges of Krujë led by the forces of the Ottoman sultans Murad II and Mehmed II.

* 1462 – Vlad III the Impaler attempts to assassinate Mehmed II ( The Night Attack ) forcing him to retreat from Wallachia.

The discontent grew to open rebellion, fed by both Ottoman and British money and support: Bashir II fled, the Ottoman empire reasserted control and Mehmed Hüsrev Pasha, whose sole term as Grand Vizier ran from 1839 to 1841, appointed another member of the Shihab family, who styled himself Bashir III.

Eventually Mehmed had this church demolished to make way for his Fatih Mosque, and Gennadius moved again to the Church of the Pammakaristos.

Meanwhile, the Ottoman issue had again become acute, and, after the fall of Constantinople in 1453, it seemed natural that Sultan Mehmed II was rallying his resources in order to subjugate Hungary.

Mehmed had to fall back and once again laid siege to Temišvar on 14 October with the main part of his army and 50 cannons.

Many doubted the young Mehmed II when he became sultan ( again ) following his father's death.

In spite of his victories he was again deposed in February 1595, shortly after the accession of Mehmed III, and banished to Malkara.

The castle came under attack with the rise of the Ottoman Empire, first after the fall of Constantinople in 1453 and again in 1480 by sultan Mehmed II.

Sultan Mehmed was furious and would have attacked the island again but for his death in 1481.

The Ottoman Empire came into its own when Mehmed II captured the Byzantine Empire's capital, Constantinople ( Istanbul ), in 1453.

They built three wooden counter-fortresses, but after months of siege Sultan Mehmed II himself came to drive them away.

He came from a cosmopolitan and distinguished family, his father Hikmet Bey was the son of Mehmed Nazım Pasha and his mother Celile Hanım was the grand-daughter of Mehmed Ali Pasha.

While Hunyadi's victory at Belgrade and the lasting legacy of his political decisions ( Vlad III the Impaler and Stephen III both came to power under Hunyadi, and he went to great lengths to have his son Matthias placed on the throne ) rendered the daunting Mehmed II far less of a threat to Christendom, his ultimate dream of a Christian reconquest of Constantinople would never be realized.

Based in Rhodes, the Knights had fought for many years ; they were able to withstand the onslaughts of Mehmed II until a succeeding and more powerful Sultan came on the scene.

The Mother Sultana Turhan Hatice conducted consultations and the most favored candidate for the post of Grand Vizier came out as the old and retired but experienced Köprülü Mehmed Pasha.

After more years of incompetent rule on the part of the despots, their failure to pay their annual tribute to the Sultan, and finally their own revolt against Ottoman rule, Mehmed came into the Morea in May 1460.

Ahmed III ( Ottoman Turkish: احمد ثالث Aḥmed-i < u > s </ u > āli < u > s </ u >) < span dir =" ltr ">( December 30 / 31, 1673 – July 1, 1736 )</ span > was Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and a son of Sultan Mehmed IV ( 1648 – 87 ).
