Saint Brieuc founded the city that bears his name in Brittany, Saint Colmán founded the great monastery of Bobbio in northern Italy and one of his monks was Saint Gall for whom the Swiss town of St Gallen and canton of St Gallen.

The Irish monk Saint Colman ( or Koloman, Irish Colmán, derived from colm " dove ") is buried in Melk Abbey and Saint Fergil ( Virgil the Geometer ) was Bishop of Salzburg for forty years, and twelfth century monastic settlements were founded by Irish Benedictines.

Colmán of Lindisfarne ( c. 605 – 18 February 675 ) also known as Saint Colmán was Bishop of Lindisfarne from 661 until 664.
