Saint Francis Solanus, O. F. M., () ( 10 March 1549 – 14 July 1610 ) was a Spanish friar and missionary in South America, belonging to the Order of Friars Minor ( the Franciscans ), who is honored as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church.

Mission San Francisco Solano was founded on July 4, 1823, and named for Francis Solanus, a missionary to the Indians of Peru born in Montilla, Spain, known as the " Wonder Worker of the New World.

* Father Solanus Casey, Roman Catholic priest, and who was declared venerable by Pope John Paul II, was born on a farm in Oak Grove.

Solanus was born 10 March 1549 in Montilla, near Córdoba, Spain, the third child of Mateo Sánchez Solano and Ana Jiménez.

In 1588 – 89 St. Francis Solanus crossed the Chaco wilderness from Peru and stopped at Asunción, but gave no attention to the Guaraní.

One of the friars of this province, Father Solanus Casey, was noted for the holiness of his life, serving as the porter of several Capuchin friaries both in Michigan and New York City for decades.

In 1860, they founded the institution as St. Francis Solanus College, receiving a formal charter from the state in 1873.

Established in 1823 and named to honor St. Francis Solanus, Mission Solano was the sole California mission established under the rule of a newly-independent Mexico.

The convent originally included seven cloisters ( the main courtyard, St. Bonaventure, St. Francis Solanus, Pepper Yard, the Infirmary, the Novitiate and the Third Order ).

The French translation was by Moses Solanus and Jean-Baptiste Brutel de la Rivière.

After completing his final theological studies, Solanus was assigned as a itinerant preacher to the surrounding villages of the region.

Solanus was beatified by Pope Clement X in 1675, and canonized by Pope Benedict XIII in 1726.

Mission San Francisco Solano, the northernmost mission along California's El Camino Real, was named in 1823 for Francis Solanus.
