The Andaman Archipelago is an oceanic continuation of the Burmese Arakan Yoma range in the North and of the Indonesian Archipelago in the South.

Most of the forests are evergreen, but there are areas of deciduous forest on North Andaman, Middle Andaman, Baratang and parts of South Andaman Island.

The South Andaman forests have a profuse growth of epiphytic vegetation, mostly ferns and orchids.

There are protected areas on Little Andaman, Narcondam, North Andaman and South Andaman, but these are mainly aimed at preserving the coast and the marine wildlife rather than the rainforests.

The islands also have a number of endemic reptiles, toads and frogs, such as the South Andaman Krait ( Bungarus andamanensis ).

After the completion of 58-billion dollar Dawei deep seaport, Burma is expected be at the hub of trade connecting Southeast Asia and the South China Sea, via the Andaman Sea, to the Indian Ocean receiving goods from countries in the Middle East, Europe and Africa, and spurring growth in the ASEAN region.

International access through the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand made the South a crossroads for both Theravada Buddhism, centered at Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Islam, especially in the former Pattani kingdom on the border with Malaysia.

Many species are threatened due to habitat destruction, and at least G. cadelliana from South Andaman Island is almost or even completely extinct already.

In the past, several species including the Philippine Serpent Eagle ( S. holospila ), Andaman Serpent Eagle ( S. elgini ) and South Nicobar Serpent Eagle ( S. klossi ) were treated as subspecies of the Crested Serpent Eagle.

In the Indian Ocean, it occurs from South Africa to the Red Sea, including Madagascar, Mauritius, and the Seychelles, and from there eastward along the coast of the Indian Subcontinent to Southeast Asia, including Sri Lanka, the Andaman Islands, and the Maldives.

The Pucikwar language, A-Pucikwar, is an extinct language of the Andaman Islands, India, formerly spoken by the Pucikwar people on the south coast of Middle Andaman, the northeast coast of South Andaman, and on Baratang Island.

One surviving tribe — the Jarawas — live in three jungle areas of South Andaman and one jungle area in Middle Andaman.

In 1989, as a division of the Bank, the Andaman and Nicobar Environmental Team ( ANET ) base station was set up on of land in Wandoor, on the southern tip of South Andaman Island to conduct research programs towards understanding of the diversity, distribution, and ecology of the islands ' fauna and flora.

On the shores north and south, the fishers and mooncursers -- smugglers -- lived along the churning Great South Bay and the narrow barrier of sand, Fire Island.

It was built mainly to satisfy public demand for creation of a grade-separated right of way for the Brooklyn and Jamaica Railroad ( later Long Island Rail Road ) on its way to the South Ferry at the foot of Atlantic Street ( later Atlantic Avenue ), where passengers could catch ferries to Manhattan.

The railroad connected Lower Manhattan via the South Ferry to Greenport on the North Fork of Long Island, where a ferry connected to Stonington, Connecticut to a rail link that continued to Boston.

Arapawa Island is a small island located in the Marlborough Sounds, at the north east tip of the South Island of New Zealand.

As his disciples boast, even though his emphasis is elsewhere, Faulkner does show his awareness of the changing order of the South quite keenly, as can be proven by a quick recalling of his Sartoris and Snopes families.

Who will deny that in a vast portion of the South the Federal action is incompatible with the Jeffersonian concept of `` the consent of the governed ''??

I'm talking about the grand manner of the Liberal -- North and South -- who is not affected personally.

His own testimony is that he has read very little in the history of the South, implying that what he knows of that history has come to him orally and that he knows the world around him primarily from his own unassisted observation.
